these interactive fiction games will truly merit the name interactive once they look to create open-source architectures that allow for fictional frameworks, but let the end-users define the innerworkings of the game/entertainment, if not the parameters (ie. a user can submit a character, it can be chosen by popularity, usability, etc. and it can become part of the greater whole). that's a competition i have something to enter in.

the choose your own adventure model for interactive entertainment is already a dinosaur. it still involves clicking links, rather than the end-user creating links. that is interactive. this other "interactive fiction" is no more interactive than switching channels on your zombie box.

i hate to be redundant in a comment regarding redundancy but here goes. rob, you've gotta institute some other function to monitor duplicated article postings. (perhaps you should patent protect old articles?) also, there should be a better selection process so the gaps between stories make more sense (ie. sometimes there is a flurry of activity from editorial, and at other times it seems like no one's upstairs at all!).

gnutella will not evolve much further. though the article suggests that the decentralized Gnutella can't handle the legal and technical threats that come from mass usage, and that no system can, the truth lies in music on demand, not a file sharing system of gnutella/napster nature. it would be nice and gay and happy if this open system worked for all, particularly the newly impoverished artist who now only requires singles rather than working on greater musical texts such as album concepts (because we the users only have time for snackpack music samples), but it ain't gonna happen. wireless downloading is about to change all of this nonsense; instantaneous subscriber/radio models. the labels won't let go, the artist needs to get restitution, and the user will still have the "columbia house"-style institutions to scam, but not the big guys. they know how to protect themselves, these music labels. paranoid assholes generally do.

at beta launch (nov. 1), members will be privy to all the content on the site. non-members will not. for now i'm just testing to see what percentage of users are comfortable simply signing up for a meaningless membership.

the site will be a full on human solutions site; meaning, all the problems you've got with other folks - we'll help you take care of 'em - from revenge to lovelife, etc., and it will be launched two months after in a slashdot-style community where users will dictate the editorial, thereby creating a many-to-many community where individuals can be entertained and get the solutions to those pesky problems they need (facts within fiction context).

goldstein states early on that, hacking is, very simply, asking a lot of questions and refusing to stop asking. but the focus of the next 20 questions or so is all on the old standard view of the cyberterrorist or the war games hacker. cnn's hack just can't focus on the correct, just the juicy. seriously though...after 18 or 19 questions, even i'm usually able to at least tell whether it's an animal, mineral or vegetable.

i wouldn't recommend linux for the mac if you're considering buying the ibook or any recent mac (produced within the past 18 months for sure). the kinks will make it far too annoying, depending on what type of user you are.

my understanding is that KBasic allows for a complete BASIC to KDE with solid IDE w/ a form designer and a complete binding to KDE style controls for html, etc....all the KDE features. who is behind this? is this a gnu project? why is the sky blue? how come mommy and daddy make so much noise some nights? help me, i'm scared.
