Re:who wins?
Just because Google hasn't sued anyone as themselves doesn't mean they haven't been party to it. They transferred a number of patents to HTC which were then used to sue Apple. Hopefully these patents were transferred with very strict language because it would be kind of sad if HTC used these for "evil".
I personally view this transferring of patents as much more reprehensible than suing using the questionable patents you created yourself, but that's just me.
So yes, they made a statement, and you're a fucking troll.
Good God, man. Settle down.

Re:I agree
I have always believed that tablets were a very small niche application.
You are shockingly wrong.
They can not, and will not replace real computers.
Theoe apple fanboys really can distort perceptions when they get going.
So after selling a hundreds of millions of iDevices - is everyone in the world beside you an "Apple Fanboy" ?

Re:Cool.
The iPhone isn't that popular.
What, are you retarded or something?
No but apparently you are. You see there where it says 27% of market share? Listening to Apple users rant on about their phones you'd think they had 99% of share and that there simply is no other phone. But since Apple users fail at life so they feel they need to validate themselves through a trinket, it's not surprising they fail at math too.

mocoNews article explains Apple's dilemma well
In this context I would like to strongly recommend this new mocoNews (paidContent.org) article entitled "Mobile Patent War On The Little Guy Demands Response From Apple". Tom Krazit explains very well what the business issues are, including that Apple itself sues over patents quite actively, especially against Android.

Re:This is way over the top
I'd be shocked if Nokia were "toast".
Agreed. Latest figures I can find (Q3 2010) put Nokia's worldwide share at 28.2%, with their largest competitor being Samsung at 17.2%. Yes, this gap is definitely down on previous years, but they're still the market leader and anything could happen in the future. Even if we consider only smartphones, Symbian is still the leader (36.6%) with Android lagging quite a way behind (25.5%).
Yes, Nokia's in decline. But that's a long way from being "toast". And it's Android and the various cheap-brand non smartphones that are gaining, not Windows Mobile (which actually saw a significant drop in market share in 2010).

Padmasre Warrior was at Cisco less than a year.
You can read about Padmasree Warrior on the Cisco web site. There is a link to a biography of her. (PDF)
Quoting from that biography: "Warrior joined Cisco in 2007." She is not the source of Cisco's problems; those problems were huge long before 2007. Ms. Warrior left Motorola on December 4, 2007. It is not correct to imply that she had a strong connection with Cisco. She was there less than a year.
Another quote: "Prior to that, she was the CTO at Motorola, where she led a team of 26,000 engineers and directed Motorola Labs, with an annual R&D budget of $3.7 billion."
Quote from another source: "Did Motorola do the right thing and retire the head of Thoughtbeam when they shuttered the operation? Nope, in a Dilbert moment they promoted Thoughtbeam's leader Padmasree Warrior to Chief Technology Officer of the entire Motorola company"
Maybe Ms. Warrior helped create Motorola's problems. Motorola has been on a loooong, slow downward slide.
When Intel's 8600 was released the vice-president of technology at the company where I worked was very unhappy. The architecture is poor, as anyone who has programmed in assembly language knows. For a time there was a hope that the 68000 would take over the market. But Motorola's management wasn't able to take advantage of that temporary superiority.
Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector is now Freescale Semiconductor.
Other people also think Motorola's management is amazingly weak. For example, Carl Icahn said this: "It is essential to the future of Motorola that its directors realize that the BOARD, especially at this precarious time, is NOT A COUNTRY CLUB OR A FRATERNITY, and that truly "qualified" people whose interests are truly aligned with Stockholders, are needed..."
You said, "I personally think the best person for the role would be a non-partisan, non-corporate figure." That's what I think, also. -
Re:Microsoft releases iPhone app FAIL!
You quoted one source, not multiple
How about if I quote MS's own Live Labs team? Or perhaps another source or yet another one? or one more?
Just because you may not want to hear the news does not mean that it does not exist. -
Re:No need for a pledge
Why should Verizon care where you get your phone? Charging you the same amount for access and not subsidizing your phone has to be more profitable for them then whatever they make on ringtones and wallpaper. A report cited here says the total US ringtone market is $500M, carrier cost for subsidizing phones has to be an order of magnitude more than that.
