Re:No longer true
It's a joke, Son. (not bad for 1947)

Re:Demand, where where is the (legeal) supply?
There are certain legal sites out there, but they all have that all-too-familiar achillies heel: The content owners want to use the step up in technology to ratchet a step up in price. They also only work on Windows XP machines. On the other hand, these days they have a heck of a lot more movies than when they launched.
Cinema Now - High cost but a lot of good stuff.
Movieflix - Cheap and plentiful, but old and obscure.
Movielink - The original, but won't even let you in the site without I.E. Similar cost / selection to cinema now.
iFilm - Always free, always a crapshoot as to what you will get. Probably the best thing to happen to independent filmmaking since Clerks.

Streaming content...
These sites also offer some television content but mostly old stuff (very old). They have streaming movies which does not require you to download onto a set top device and then view on your tv. The sites are http://www.cinemanow.com/ http://www.movieflix.com/ and http://www.ifilm.com/. They have free and subscription content.

Slightly confused?
Of course, giving away free dvd players can't be good for business.

Re:Where's the content?
You obviously dont enjoy the freedom of hosting your own
website/s.
And maybe havent discovered the joys of suprnova and Bit Torrent.
Now I can watch movies, I never got round to seeing at the pictures, or movies that interest me but may not have got marvelous ratings.
There are also free, strictly legal movies available to watch from places if you look around. We have a small LAN i've set up at my home (I still live with my parents (Im a sad lonely geek)) so we share the broadband connection. My dad gets his kick from movieflix.com not really my cup of tea, but its there none the less.
Its not just about content either ... gone are the days of reconnecting 6 or 7 times before actually being able to browse the web.
Its also handy to be able to administer your box from work, or work from home (when not unemployed).
Besides in the UK, the cheapest Broadband is almost as cheap as the crappy dial up ISP's. -
already around: sort of
There are already some legal internet movie services. Movie Flix offers a whole bunch of movies on demand. Streamcast lets you download the movie beforehand, but that takes times, and they use DRM which only lets you see the movie for a day or two. Meanwhile, all the major P2P networks have lots of movies.
Lots of people like to watch movies on their TV, but don't have a computer-tv hookup, but that will change. However, the major studios are trying to monopolize all distribution, and are just creating more problems. Meanwhile, movies are proliferating through all P2P, but quality still lacks, and it can be awfully slow, even with high speed internet.

There are more free movie sites..
Like http://www.movieflix.com/ or http://www.ifilm.com/. They carry much more and much better films (lots of feature films since the silent era till cca 50's).

Re:Renting over the web
I don't know of any sites that you could rent movies on line, but if you like classic B-movies (they have the original Night of the Living Dead in streaming video in it's entirety), go to movieflix.com. If you like independent films, try atomfilms.com. They have some pretty funny stuff there. Both sites are free.
