NGLayout for Mozilla 5.0
The Mozilla folks have announced a new roadmap for development of the 5.0 browser. This includes mothballing all of the old front ends and moving to a single Cross-Platform FE with NGLayout. It is also interesting to note that the X heads within Mozilla have decided to move from Motif to GTK as the primary toolkit for X Window System development. -
New Mozilla Status Report
syncomm writes "There is a new Mozilla status report online. Interested GNOME users might also want to take a look at the updated GnomeFE screenshot " I can't wait to see what the GTK Theme stuff does for the GTK Mozilla. I gotta install that stuff and start making my own theme. Its been to long. -

Chris Nelson writes "The Mozilla Project has just released their specification for customizable chrome inside the browser. Or visit visit my site, mozillaZine, where you can read more about the spec and see a screenshot of the new config in action. " -
Mozilla Gets Java Support
Maciej Stachowiak writes "The recent 0.6 release of The Hunry Programmers' Japhar JVM now supports Open JVM Interface (OJI). This means that you can use it with Mozilla and have Java support. " -

Entertaining HTML Testing
john k. was the latest, but there have been many folks that wrote in to tell us that Mozilla has the HTML Slashdot Logo on their web site for stress testing their web browser. Its a fair test- its only a little bit harder to render than Slashdot itself. And FWIW, the logo was generated a few months ago by nate's gif2html program which I can't seem to find any more. -
Mozilla and Apache Saving Bandwith
Marcos Hauer writes "I've just stumbled over a Real Good Thing (TM) in the Mozilla site: HTTP Compression. They tell us that Mozilla can request compressed data from Apache servers, receive the content gziped and decompress it on the fly. Ah, and they have the Apache Module Source too . Way cool! " Several people have asked to have me incorporate this into Slash. It's a valid idea, and I may take a stab at it in the not-so-distant-future. I think it could be done in a few lines of perl anyway. -

Gnomzilla
john k. writes "I noticed on the mozilla status page that the GNOME/Gtk+ front-end has been checked into CVS. I guess that port was alive after all." Between this and Raster's work on themifying Gnome, I suspect that the world will have fairly exotic looking web browsers in the not so distant future. -

Mozilla News
HoserHead wrote in to let us in on the skinny on recent mozilla.org developments. Basically, it goes like this - binaries built nightly are available for download, and the Win32 ones can integrate with the IE/Win98 Active Desktop. Screenshots are here, but I think it's a personal workstation, so can we get a mirror or two (small shots)? I wonder if we're on track to beating them at their own game... -
Friday Quickies
Alan Bailward sent us a link to a funny User Friendly. And Joe wrote in to tell us that FoxTrot is doing a series where Jason writes an OS over here. daschel wrote in to send us a link to a site about Bubble Wrap. What a strange world. Angus Davis wrote in to warn us that they've posted lots of interested stuff for mozilla hackers. This includes some docs on the new layout engine and porting instructions. They also need help porting the new engine if anyone is interested. And lastly, just wanted to mention that Everything has swollen to 6600 nodes in around 48 hours. There's some cool stuff in there to read now, and the server is holding up pretty well under somewhat less intensive usage than Wed. -

Bonsai and Tinderbox Source Released
Mike Shaver has informed me "mozilla.org has released the source for bonsai and tinderbox, the tools used to track the mozilla CVS tree. The source is available from the mozilla CVS server, in themozilla/webtoolsdirectory." Good news, if you ask me. I'm sure there are a lot of projects that can benefit from these tools. -

Mozila's new CVS Server
An anonymous tipster wrote in to tell us that Mozilla.org got a new CVS server. Now normally I wouldn't really notice something like this, but they have a web page with Pictures and Specs. 2 Gigs of RAM, 80 gigs of hd, 4 CPUs, all working together to feed 1000 open source developers at once. If anyone is listening, I want one of those for christmas. -

Messenger source code to be released soon
According to a C|net article the source code of Messenger, an important component of the Communicator Suite, will be unveiled over the next several weeks. It seems Netscape is currently removing some encryption and third-party code. So far no sign of it on Mozilla.org. -
Mozilla releases NGLayout (aka Raptor)
Arne Coucheron warned us that Netscape's new layout stuff is now available in early code form. For those of you who've been paying a lot of attention, this was that thing known as raptor. You can read about it or download it. -

New Mozilla Code, and Public CVS is Online!
Hamlet Batista writes "A new version of the Mozilla source has been released, and the CVS is Online. Please try the mirrors first. " -
Wang sues Netscape
Eric Maland wrote in to give us this link where you can read about todays Official Slashdot Stupid Lawsuit (OSSL). The suit is over a patent created in 1984, and apparently is over using a Save As dialog box to save files with an extension, and using that extension to decode files later (eg, what every DOS/Win program has ever done) and over the concepts of bookmarks. Wang just lost a million respect points in my book. -
Raptor Project
v.tiknius wrote in to hook us up with this link where you can read about 'Raptor', the codename for a replacement for Netscape's page rendering code. Hopefully it will fix the zany bugs we've all come to work around, as well as let Netscape to perform as fast as the newer, lighter browsers. The big issue I caught is the need for Mac and Unix developers to help. This would be a cool project for anyone to join in on. -
New Mozilla Source
Jacob Berkman writes "There is a new tarball of the Mozilla source on their ftp server, and soon the mirrors. Improvements (I hear) are it is easier to build on win95, and all of the FE (mac/win/unix) source is included. Not many external patches, just Netscape's people's patches." Download it from one of the many sites on the mirror list. -
Mozilla Info
Jordan Mendelson wrote in to give us a link to the new Mozilla logo competition. It's unofficial, but I'm sure many of you Gimp heads will still enjoy it. The other thing is that an anonymous read sent in a link to The Mozilla Bug Tracker which is currently empty. We all know better than that, so when you find 'em, post 'em. -
Mozilla Source Code Released.
Many many people wrote in to remind us that today is the day. So everyone run to Mozilla.org, check the mirror list, pick a site and and snag the code. It should be up around 10pst. I can't wait to see what happens in the next few weeks. -
Mozilla Documentation Released
"Mozilla.org posted a huge amount of documentation this morning at this location. It has all sorts of info on NSPR, the javascript library, building on different systems and lots more!" Excellent news for everyone who is planning on compiling this bugger in the twenty minutes following its arrival on the ftp servers. How many minutes before we have a native Linux/Alpha compile? *grin* -

Jamie Zawinski of about:jwz fame writes "Hey, hype my party! Anyone who cares about open source is invited, and I'm sure that includes all Slashdot readers. Flyer, FAQ Read the FAQ. It's, uh, funny. " Join in the fun of celebrating one of the most important events in modern computing. -

Netscape releases draft license
Today, Netscape released a draft version of its development license. From what I understand of it, it's like the GPL in that if you change it, you must make the modifications generally available (but not necessarily on the same medium as the compiled product). An interesting twist is that it also includes a patent license for all the patents applying to the original code. -
Mozilla.org And Linux
First off, James Carter writes "Netscape's new site for coordination and support of the sources of it's browser (mozilla.org) mentions linux as one of first three source targets along with 95/NT and Mac PPC. Another boost for linux's emergence as one of the top platforms. Further, an unsurprising acknowledgement that the linux community will provide a fair number of developers." James also sent This Link. And speaking of Linkage, our Second mozilla.org link today is the library of links related to Mozilla's source. The short list includes The Cathedraal and the Bazaar, Netscape's Press Release, and Slashdot. I'm tickled. Thanks to Joe Drew for letting me know. -

Mozilla.org Opens Doors
Netscape has opened up Mozzila.org for dealing with the soon to be available source code to their browser. It's about time Mozilla (this link will only work under netscape) resurfaced- he's been missed for a long time. Thanks to Mike T for sending us This link where you can read about the site, and the dedicated Team that Netscape has on the job. Netscape is doing a great job so far and deserve congratulations. There will be growing pains for everyone in the next few months, but it'll be so worth it in another year!
