Ask yourselves these questions... apk
Can adblock do 16 things hosts do for speed, security, & reliability:
1.) Protect vs. malicious sites/servers (beyond malicious ads: See 2-10 next)
2.) Protect vs. fastflux botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
3.) Protect vs. dynamic dns botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
4.) Protect vs. DGA botnets + stop communication to C&C servers
5.) Protect vs. downed DNS (adds reliability)
6.) Protect vs. DNS redirect poisoned dns
7.) Protect vs. trackers
8.) Protect vs. spam
9.) Protect vs. phishing
10.) Protect vs. bandwidth caps
11.) Get you past a dnsbl
12.) Keep you off dns request logs
13.) Speed up websurfing by adblocks & hardcoded fav. sites
14.) Work on ANY webbound app (think stand-alone email programs) multiplatform.
15.) Give you easily texteditor controlled data for the above
16.) Do all that & block ads (better than addons) more efficiently in cpu cycles + memory usage* "?"

P.S.=> ANSWER ="NO" to each above on AdBlock doing it as well or at all!
AdBlock does FAR less than hosts do & FAR less efficiently - hosts by way of comparison, do MORE w/ less + Hosts start w/ the IP stack before REDUNDANT inefficient addons BEGIN to operate (as 1st resolver queried):
AdBlock's 4++gb & 100% CPU usage flooring inefficiency -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... + ClarityRay defeats it + it 'souled-out' & is crippled by default paid off to not do its job http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/... & ABP too http://finance.yahoo.com/news/...
AdBlock adds complexity/room for breakdown/exploit + from a slower mode of operations (usermode = more messagepassing overheads vs. hosts in kernelmode).

AdBlock = Inferior + 'Souled-Out'... apk
APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ SR-1 32/64-bit:
http://start64.com/index.php?o...
FREE & adds speed, security, + reliability, doing more with less, more efficiently vs. addons + fixes DNS' redirect security issues:

A.) Hosts do more than:
1.) AdBlock ("souled-out" 2 Google/Crippled by default http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/... )
2.) Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...

D.) Hosts files yield more:
1.) Speed (adblock & hardcodes fav sites - faster than remote dns)
2.) Security (vs. malicious domains serving malcontent + block spam/phish & trackers)
3.) Reliability (vs. downed, Kaminsky redirected (99% ISP DNS' = unpatched vs. it), DGA, Fastflux, & dynDNS botnets)
4.) Anonymity (vs. dns request logs + dnsbl's).---
* Hosts do more w/ less (1 file) @ faster levels (ring 0) vs redundant inefficient addons (slowing slower ring 3 browsers) via filtering 4 the IP stack (coded in C, loads w/ os, & 1st net resolver queried w\ 45++ yrs.of optimization).
* Addons = more complex + slow browsers in messagepassing (use a few concurrently & see) & are nullified by native browser methods - It's how Clarityray's destroying Adblock.
* Addons slowup slower usermode browsers layering on more - & bloat RAM consumption + excessive cpu use too (4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...)

Scrapbook in Firefox
I have over 3,000 webpages and over 2000 links saved and organized in Scrapbook. Scrapbook can recursively safe entire websites. Searching for good information is tedious with search engines. Webpages come and go. Scrapbook lets you build a library, your own personal knowledgeable over years. You can highlight text and save the results, too. All the webpages can be be organized in a tree-like hierarchal manner.
The only issue with it has to do with synchronization and differential backups. It should be rewritten to save Mozilla Archive Format files MAFF's so that synchronization would be quicker from machine to machine.

Democratizing? Hardly. Just look at Debian.
I don't get how you can say that open source software is "democratizing". Look at any of the major projects today, including the ones you listed. A small number of them are "benevolent" dictatorships (like Python, or the Linux kernel). Others are controlled by a very small number of people making up a "steering committee" or a "core team" or even a corporation (like GCC, or FreeBSD, or Firefox, or Chrome). Others are utterly dysfunctional, with mind-numbing politics and faux voting and illusions of democracy (like Debian).
The recent shenanigans involving Debian and systemd, or Firefox and its UI changes, really go to show how undemocratic open source projects are today. Here we have cases of thousands upon thousands of users saying, "No! We don't want that!", yet the developers go ahead and do exactly what so many users have specifically asked not be done.
Just look at Mozilla's own feedback collection stats for their Firefox products. Currently, 86% of people have filed "sad" reports, and only 14% have filed "happy" ones! If Firefox were truly developed in a democratic fashion, we wouldn't see so many unhappy users, even when we consider that unhappy users are more likely to say they're unhappy. If democracy were at play here, we wouldn't see the developers constantly going against the wishes of the users.
Get real. There's nothing special about open source projects that somehow makes them more democratic. They're just as totalitarian as anything else that involve governance.

No, it can't (true story)
Result? W. Palant RAN after he wrote me by email 1st saying "hosts are a shitty solution" to which I replied:
"Show us adblock can do more for added speed, security, reliability, & anonymity than hosts can, + that adblock does it more efficiently than hosts"
Which on my latter 'point-in-challenge' on efficiency AdBlock's proven by research to be MASSIVELY inefficient -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... & adblock does FAR less than hosts (especially crippled by default).
I sent Wladimir Palant that challenge in response to his statement from 2 different email addresses I use!
Result = Still no answer from him in regard to my challenge put to him to this very day MONTHS later - that tell you anything? It did me!
He knows his addon is less efficient & features laden by FAR vs. hosts - Wladimir Palant RAN like a scared rabbit!
ClarityRay's also DESTROYING AdBlock - via native browser methods to DUMP what addons you use (it can't DO THAT to hosts files).
I only tell it how it is on hosts' superiority vs. AdBlock - Funny part is, Wladimir Palant running does too!
Especially considering "Almost ALL Ads Blocked" has 'souled-out' -> Google & Others Pay Adblock Plus To Show You Ads Anyway: http://news.slashdot.org/comme... & ABP too http://finance.yahoo.com/news/...
APK
P.S.=> Bottom-Line: Hosts = a superior solution that also fixes DNS redirect security issues (vs. browser addons & their inefficiencies + messagepassing overheads as well as myriad lack of abilities hosts have from 1 file that's part of the IP stack itself - faster, more efficient, & less redundant as well, since TCP/IP has 45++ yrs. of refinement & optimization in it, & runs in a higher CPU serviced ring of privelege & operations in kernelmode vs. slower usermode layering over browsers slowing them more, & hosts = 1st resolver queried by the OS itself also)... apk

Re:Hardware?
I'm not hostile to them, I'm using Firefox right now. I'm just critical of their choices in certain areas.
Items like the burger menu and status bar being like Chrome's take priority over fixing major issues with the sqlite database(s) (install SQLite manager, you'll be amazed at how long data is being stored) and simple things like being able to view content inside the browser (example bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/s... - yes, it's coming up on its 15th birthday).
Most of their design choices are just "me too" instead of anything meaningful or original. I can't fault them too much though, they set out to copy the major browsers early on and they've stuck with it. I just wish they were quicker with less visible fixes and slower on design changes.

Re:Strong Thunderbird?
One word: CardDAV. The bugs asking for this feature go back at least five years. There are other minor issues outstanding, currently solved through extensions that often are not updated regularly, but this is one of the biggies.

Re:Next challenge: FirefoxOS phones
I think that it's a worthwhile challenge to contribute to the FirefoxOS platform and/or to build apps for it.
Hear, hear! I've released one myself early last year. I wish I had more time for it as it's such an important platform to support.
I love the idea of an app package that you can use on other platforms. The mobile market has needed that for a long time now. If other vendors will support their app packages (as Mozilla intends) that would a massive win for consumers. BlackBerry already supports Android apps, and has the best mobile browser on the market; it shouldn't be a stretch for them. Microsoft, well, they just need apps, not unlike any future players in the mobile market.
This is encouraging, but not quite what I was hoping to see on Android

Re:Goal is ... to ruin FireFox?
They shuffled menu items around.
The horror! I didn't actually notice any changes, but when I do I'll be sure to rant about that deal-breaking change!
They deleted the status bar which showed you the full URL when you hovered over it.
Terrible, isn't it? Now it only shows the full URL when you hover over
... ummm.... er ... to hell with them! They came out with FireFox 29 which is a UI abomination.
I know, it's crazy! The last thing users want is a simple interface they can completely customize to satisfy their wants and needs.
-
Yeah right - what's next?
Fri Feb 6 2015 22:52:58 PST
This list is too long for Bugzilla's little mind; the Next/Prev/First/Last buttons won't appear on individual bugs.
Status: UNCONFIRMED, NEW, ASSIGNED, REOPENED
Product: Firefox
10000 bugs found.Firefox bug list (probably incomplete because of a query limit of 10000)
You would think that with that many open bugs, they would know what to work on.
And I don't mean just close them as "won't fix", but actually work on them, fix them. -
Re:Here is what I *HOPE* is next
>https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/the-addon-bar/
Yes, well, that and this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-... (Classic Theme Restorer)
But why should the basic UI choices be an addon while they add useless stuff like developer tools, voice chat, text chat, etc directly into the program? Seems very backwards to me.
Oh and one thing I left off the list that is perhaps the most important and likely never to be added:
7) Give users a way to turn down and/or control all this new javascript animation and tight loops so it doesn't destroy thin clients, older machines, and decimate the batteries on laptops and phones. And no, no-script will not work... you either ruin the site or need a degree in programming to figure it out so most users can't use it at all.
-
Re:Here is what I *HOPE* is next
You forgot the most important part - bring back the fucking status bar you fucking shits.

Waterfox is genuinely stable
So we know the Mozilla code for the most part is finally reliable. I think it's performance time, it really is time for this to kick into high gear, ASAP.

Re:Strong Thunderbird?
Crypto GUI with the signing and encrypting.
Thunderbird has built in support for S/MIME, and you can install Enigmail for gpg

Firefox users: 86% sad, 14% happy.
Look at the user feedback about Firefox to see the real picture.
Right now, for the last week, 86% of the 10,000-plus reports are "sad". Only 14% are "happy".
That feedback shows exactly why Firefox's usage is dropping: people hate it, they hate what Mozilla has done to it, and they hate how Mozilla refuses to fix the many problems plaguing Firefox.
A 14% approval rating is shameful, even when it comes to people, companies and products that are generally despised.
A 2% failure rate is deemed unacceptable in most fields. An 86% failure rate is unbelievably terrible, yet that's exactly what Mozilla has "achieved" with Firefox.

Firefox Hello, Pidgin
Firefox Hello bundles this kind of thing right into the web browser. I kind of like this idea for allowing basic functionality (think of the browser-based IM in Google and Facebook) and even extending that to voice and video (the way Google Hangouts does), but I'd ideally like to see a more powerful stand-alone client for people that want more than just a few casual conversations here and there. (This is an even better idea for Thunderbird, since your contact list lives there.)
Fortunately, we have pidgin, a stand-alone IM client with a great feature set and wonderful cross-platform support (Adium is merely an OS X implementation of Pidgin). Pidgin desperately needs help, as it hasn't successfully had an easy-to-use voice (let alone video) capability. I'm hoping that WebRTC (which powers Firefox Hello and, I think, Google Hangouts) can provide this, at least for using Firefox Hello and/or bridging between two Pidgin/Adium/Libpurple users.

64 bit, webcam?
From: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firef...
"50% of Fx users on Windows run 64 bit OS. We've reached a threshold where the effort makes sense."
Work on the webcam side now that HTML5 video is supported. -
DXR, the code indexer
Wow, what an easy pitch.
:-) At Mozilla, we've put together a tool called DXR ( https://github.com/mozilla/dxr... ). It indexes your code and lets you do text and regex searches. But if you can get your project to build under clang, you can really have some fun, with queries that find...* Calls of a function (great for dead code removal)
* Uses a type
* Overrides of a method
* Uses and definitions of macros
* etc., etc., etc. There are something like 24 different structural queries you can do.Because all of this is informed by the internal data structures of the clang compiler, it's nigh on 100% accurate (aside from more dynamic behaviors like sticking function pointers in a table and passing them around). You can also explore a hyperlinked version of the source, bouncing from #include to #include and drilling into methods.
Here's how to set it up: https://dxr.readthedocs.org/en...
Here's our production instance you can play with: https://dxr.mozilla.org/mozill...If you run into trouble, pop into #static on irc.mozilla.org, and we'll be happy to help you.

P.S.=> ANSWER ="NO" to each above on Ghostery/AdBlock doing it as well or at all!
BOTH do far less than hosts do & less efficiently - hosts by way of comparison, do MORE w/ less + Hosts start w/ the IP stack before REDUNDANT inefficient addons BEGIN to operate (as 1st resolver queried):
AdBlock's 4++gb & 100% CPU usage flooring inefficiency -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... + ClarityRay defeats it + it 'souled-out' & is crippled by default paid off to not do its job http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/...
Ghostery's Advertiser owned - "A fox guards the henhouse"-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...
Both add complexity/room for breakdown/exploit + from a slower mode of operations (usermode = more messagepassing overheads vs. hosts in kernelmode).
