Re:cool.
I have a few close personal friends who do make a living off playing music, but it always becomes fairly hectic... you always have to be gigging to stay afloat. The thing is, most musicians who are not famous and touring end up doing a lot of teaching, which usually pays quite well, depending on the community. Sure, that's sort of an office job, but it's not quite the same as an IT guy or paper pusher.
Along with many others, I am a firm supporter of using records as advertisements for live shows. That said, it does require a good deal of money to record, produce, manufacture, and distribute an album. Happily, that's where the internet can come in doubly handy: it obviates manufacture and enables near-costless distribution (via P2P).
To be honest, I think that a lot of the record industry's problems could be solved if they improved the quality and lowered the cost of online music. Many people (myself included) pirate music from time to time because it's a) relatively easily available, and b) free. If there were a legitimized version of MP3Sparks charging the same prices, I think the record companies would see a lot more online sales. I am loathe to spend $12 on a new CD, especially in crappy 128 or 160kbps MP3 format, but give me 256k or lossless for $5 per CD and I'd start buying up a whole collection. Make it part of a social network community with easy music suggestion and you've got a goldmine. -
Re:Wrong Question
so use http://mp3sparks.com/
you can use your allofmp3 account. no idea why the new domain. -
Re:The summary contradicts itself1. No online music stores encode in Vorbis. Except that one of the most popular online music stores in the world has great support for Vorbis.

Re:iTunes for UbuntuThe only thing capability that iTunes has that Ubuntu doesn't is the iTunes music store...but there is a host of other music services that work on Linux. Not to mention the Amarok-bundled Magnatune (non-RIAA) music store.
Amarok is lighter than iTunes, it can sync iPod's flawlessly, (rip and put on music from any computer, any iPod) iTunes is not a reason to stay on Mac/Windows.

Re:No Big Deal
And in places, it's still AllOfMP3

Re:Countdown until AoMP3 reappears in China/BrasilFWIW, you can't pay by credit card at MP3Sparks either. Why do you say that? It seems that they take all credit cards except AmEx, Cirrus, and Union Card.

Re:Countdown until AoMP3 reappears in China/Brasil
FWIW, you can't pay by credit card at MP3Sparks either.
According to their website, you can pay with credit card:We accept payment made by credit or debit cards. Just specify the card type and payment sum. The money is added immediately upon card authorization.
I can't imagine what they would have to gain by lying, so presumably they are able to accept credit cards for the time being. Anyone with an account who can comment? -
Re:No Big Deal
That (along with Russia's desire to become a member of the WTO) is probably why allofmp3.com is now mp3Sparks.com, including the same logins/passwords and the same typos in the track names and album titles, and of course owned by the same people. more info here

Re:Countdown until AoMP3 reappears in China/Brasil
Actually, it seems that http://www.mp3sparks.com/ already offers all the music from AoMP3.
So I guess AoMP3 has already reincarnated. From what I understand, the RIAA...I mean, US Government...I mean, WTO actually named AllOfMp3 by name, rather than specifying that a specific class of service be suspended.
So even though MP3Sparks is the same site, run by the same company, offering the same service, since the name is different, they've successfully satisfied the WTO request in this regard.
FWIW, you can't pay by credit card at MP3Sparks either.
