I'm only using GNOME 0.99.3 on my Debian (potato) system. It's VERY usable. I haven't had it crash on me yet, no strange panel disappearances to speak of, and its been a huge improvement over the GNOME stuff in slink.

E, no matter how related to GNOME, is not an integral part of GNOME. GNOME has been pretty good at documentation, I guess (can't really say for sure, I haven't had a need to read any yet :). Yes, the lack of really full docs for E is distressing, but I deal with it. It is after all only in version 0.15/6.

RPMS are a pain for something as complicated as GNOME, AFAICT. With .debs, on the other hand... :)

ftp://hopkinsfbi.cinternet.net is still available, albeit slowly. The other mirror sites are probably a good choice as well.
