Hopkins FBI Playable Demo for Linux
palpatine writes "Hopkins FBI
playable demo for Linux is now available at their FTP site. I've already tried the game, and it's loads of fun. "
To big for me to download. I need a T1. Hell, I need the
other channel on my ISDN line!
Hmm, way way way too slow...
I'll try to mirror it somehow..

I played around with an OS/2 beta of Hopkins many months ago. I was impressed. Since then, I've moved on to Linux. I'm just wondering how the versions compare. I wouldn't be surprised if the Linux version was a little better than the OS/2 version. Has anyone seen both of them side by side?
What's a rolling demo?
It's not one of those cheezy "movie of someone
playing" type deal is it?
some mirrors are listed on their websites under Rolling demo, but there is also the playable one.
Peace out.

wahh.. I couldn't see the naked cartoon chick in the bathtub...with the big flat-shaded hooters.!
Keep in mind his ISDN is shared between at least 4 heavy net users.
Well I'm taking advangtage of the DS3 here at work
before jamming it down my 128k straw.
I didn't want to download 40 megs to find it's not for my computer. Am I right in guessing there's no source included?
Damn you yankees, anything above 33.6 down here
is so prohibitivley expensive, I don't know
_anyone_ with a non-work non-PSTN connection.

Same situation here in New Zealand.
What's it like in Europe, people?
Nah...
Linux is a big massive combi van, trundling down the Operating System superhighway. It's picking up more speed than one would think for a van of that type, but that's mainly cos the road's downhill.
Near to it, there's an even bigger massive mack truck with the slogan "Where do you want to go today?" written in crayon hastily on the side. It keeps backing away from the combi van, then suddenly accelerating full steam ahead, as if it can't decide whether this van is a threat or just a little van.
Behind it a fair way potters along a solar driven cart with a little demon on it. There's a few older types, and some students, but they all have the word "BSD" printed on a helmet that each wears. While they're not fighting amongst themselves, they're pointing and laughing at the suits hanging off the combi van, which we'll come to in a minute.
Now, the van itself is mainly inhabited in the front regions by both young and old hippies. The vehicle would be going in a dead straight line (as the solar car is) if it weren't for the fact that they seem to have splitten into two factions. The only reason you can tell one faction from another is that one has money (which is kinda out of style for hippies), and the other doesn't.
In the middle of the van lie a whole lot of gibbering... erm... people. They have crude "newbie" stickers on them. Occasionly, they try to ask a question, but somebody up the front just shouts "RTFM!" and they quiet down. Hanging around this group are some younger types.. much younger types.. who persist in picking their nose and sp34k1ng l1k3 th1s. The rest of the van keeps shoving them in with the newbies, unless they're close enough to the many doors to be shoved off.
At the back of the van are a few tall people with very big smiles and even bigger three piece suits. Occasionly, they try and hand out money to the "well-off" group of hippies, or try not to be bitten by everybody else. Once or twice they'll even help a newbie, if said newbie happens to be rich. Also are some suits attempting to catch onto the van, or keep up with the van. They're not very succesfull, mainly because they don't seem to realise that you can't hold onto something very well if you're also trying to hold onto big wads of cash.
Finally, there's a few more hippie types huddling in a corner with laptops in hand. They're not saying -anything-. They're typing away, completely oblivious to everything else going on around them. They are with the Tao. They are the only people actually getting any work done around here.

Linux version is best...
x86 only, no source. Sorry {Alpha,Sparc,ARM,PowerPC} lovers.
I remember hearing about this game back in late '97 and how it was going to be available for BeOS, Windows, and OS/2. I even signed on to their beta list, but never received any email. Looks like Be loses yet again to the Linux juggernaut, despite the fact that it'd probably be easier to port the game to BeOS, with its nice DirectWindow and sound API's, than to X and /dev/dsp.
It's just as well, since I use Linux more than BeOS anyway. I'll definitely have to download this and check it out.

As someone with only a POTS connection at home I am taking advantage of the T1 line at the college to speedily tell you how little sympathy I have for people who "only" have ISDN.
I see even classic Slashdot is now pretty much unusable on dial up anymore.
Well, since they differentiate between a "rolling demo" and a "playable demo," I'd guess it's either just that or perhaps a bunch of cut scenes taped together.
Okay, I got Linux installed. So where's the free beer everyone keeps talking about??
120kb/s. Seems quite okay with me. I'm going to play! :>
