Grow a victory garden, go to jail
The government could even set aside land for small community gardens, like they do to build parks for recreation.
That's unlikely with cities and homeowners' associations being anal about zoning, throwing people in jail for three months for growing what used to be called a victory garden.

Re:That's kind of the idea.I don't. Its not very effective to call 911 to save your own life.
Calling 911 when you life is in danger rarely does any good. Even when it is not screwed up chances of the police showing up in time to stop what you think is about to happen to you are small indeed.
Cops protect cops.
How many cop murders go unsolved? Not many. Why? Because when a cop gets murdered cops think it is important to catch that person. It is not very important to catch your murderer though.

Re:Farming without a farm
There's nothing stopping you growing food
I was referring to threats by the City of Oak Park against Julie Bass.

Re:Ummm.
I don't mind late replies; some of the better discussions take place after everyone has calmed down.
I think, upon re-reading your posts, that I extrapolated a larger meaning than you had intended. For essentially creating a strawman and attacking you for it, I apologize.
However, I'm still left with the sense that you think everyone lives in a house with some land (1/5 of an acre is around 8700 square feet; I'm assuming that doesn't include the house's foundation), that everyone owns their house (a lease rarely grants you the right to tear up the yard to make a garden), that local ordinances do not prevent them from gardening (people have been fined and even threatened with jail time for gardening in their own lawns when prohibited from doing so), and that everyone is physically capable of gardening (a task which is hard on the knees and back).
Even assuming all that were not the case (which rules out the "majority" of people), you are still ignoring the greatest source of external costs of gardening: fertilizer. You could divide your yard into plots, I suppose, and practice intelligent crop rotation; but that would be more difficult, require a greater time investment, and result in lower yields (which brings us back to the point of the original article). It also requires good soil to start with (yet another condition that often doesn't match what people really have).
As I said before, I'm not against gardening; I just don't think it's a solution on nearly the scale you claim.

Re:Damn unfortunate
Follow-up to my other reply...
Read that, and tell me that it wasn't a hate crime.

Cooper might not be sexist, just incompetent
Here is another case where she made a big mistake, was proven wrong by evidence and wouldn't admit that she made a mistake. http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2010/09/did_oakland_county_prosecutor.html http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/local/prosecutor-laura-johnson-freed-murder-evidence-not-enough-20100927-wpms

Cop & TSA worker steal Pizza and punch store c
And in related news, check this couple or shall we say "duo":

http://www.infowars.com/detroit-airport-cop-and-tsa-worker-accused-of-stealing-pizza-and-punching-clerk/
http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/local/officers-accused-of-crossing-the-lineHe's an airport cop, she's a TSA worker at the same airport. On the weekends these two love to booze it up
and ... watch the video!!The short of it, they go into a gas station convenience store, she grabs two pieces of pizza and they try to leave the
store. The store clerk comes after the two demanding payment for the pizza, she takes out her TSA id card
and says she's with "Homeland Security". The store clerk not impressed by the two follows them out to the
pumps and tries to get their license plate. She opens the tailgate thus flipping the license plate up so the clerk can't
see it. Some back and forth. At one point then the clerk gets the tailgate but then the cop runs after him and
punches him in the face.It turns out though, "Homeland Sekurity" used her credit card to pay for an item in the store, the shenanigans
outside the store trying to cover up the sign were completely unnecessary.Just think about it, these fucks get to see you naked, they get to harrass you each step of the way until you're
in the plane.. :-) but in real life they are pathetic scum. Keep that in mind next time you see any.. -
Bad cops need punished. If that is not happening,
I'm here to tell you it's not happening, and it is a problem.
From the officers who deserted their post to join the looting in Katrina to the incident that happened yesterday where two law enforcement officers robbed a convenience store and attacked the clerk while flashing their badges:
http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/local/officers-accused-of-crossing-the-line
"HARTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Clerks who work at a Clyde Road gas station are forced to dial 911 after two police officers allegedly lost control. They are accused of doing everything from stealing pizza and punching a clerk to posing as Homeland Security. ... There were plenty of witnesses, including an off-duty Livingston County deputy, who happened to be getting gas at the time and tried to intervene."No charges have been filed. Neither LEO has been arrested. They've been clearly identified from the videotape and the testimony of a sheriff's deputy. Robbery. Assault. Using the badge to facilitate the robbery. DUI. All of it documented on tape and by eyewitness LEO testimony. The deputy saw it, and did not arrest his fellow LEOs, apparently deciding the extent of his duty was to merely try to persuade his fellow LEOs not to commit felonies.
Tell me again how it's just a few bad apples.
Oh, right, these are just ordinary people asked to do extraordinary things, so we have to expect this kind of behavior. That's odd, because I grew up in a world where randomly drafted 18-year-old kids were expected to maintain discipline even after they'd been shot and bullets were still flying.
Special legal status and protection. Endless training. Uniforms. Partners and Radios. Body armor. Backup. Souped-up armored hotrods. Chemical spray. Batons. Swithblades. Tasers. Guns. License to use dealy force with the assumption your use of violence was justified.
But somehow, even with all of those advantages, we're still supposed to think, "Well, they're just human, we should expect bad behavior from time to time."
Funny, I was always taught that mistakes are understandable right up to the point that a firearm enters the room, and that when a bullet is present, there are no more "accidents."
But hey, because a few Catholic priests turned out to be heinous pedophiles, we shouldn't indict the entire Catholic clergy. Actually, when you find evidence that the Pope himself shielded child molesters, that's pretty much exactly what you should do, because the Vatican knew of the abuse, and became accomplices by protecting pedophiles from being called to account.
Few bad apples, few bad apples, I keep hearing this phrase, "Just a few bad apples," and that's strange because the whole saying is that "A few bad apples spoils the bunch."
How many more bad apples do you need before you concede the problem is systemic?
