    1. Download, install MySQL ODBC Drivers for Windows from http://www.mysql.com/downloads/api-myodbc.html
    2. Create an ODBC source in Control Panel, entering all necessary information for your Unix/MySQL Server.
    3. Create all necessary tables in MySQL.
    4. In Access, New, Link Table, Files of Type: ODBC, choose your just-created ODBC source, choose your tables.
    5. You now have all your MySQL tables accessable just if they were Access tables. You can create forms, reports, whatever, using data stored in MySQL. Only thing you can't do is modify table schema from Access - and if you do that from within MySQL, you need to refresh your table links (Tools, Database Utilities, Linked Table Manager).

    Check this page from the MySQL manual. It describes how to setup MySQL as an ODBC datasource. If you can manage to get that to work, you might be able to do what you want. Granted...I wouldn't recommend it because any way you slice it I can't imagine it not being a nightmare to implement, manintain or troubleshoot.

    Hi, I just actually started do this for my company, and found that if you take a look at the windows ODBC drivers that are available for MySQL, you'll find that at least that part is easy. The tough part (which I'm still working on) is getting the right connection string for the ODBC datasource. It's probably documented somewhere in those driver packages though, but I haven't had enough time to fully take a look at it all.

    Just look under "Web Development Companies" on PHP's site, or under "Some MySQL Consultants" on MySQL's site. My company has been doing (almost exclusively) PHP/MySQL website development and consulting since the spring of 1999. Thanks in part to our listings on these sites, we get a good amount of site traffic (and therefore business) from folks looking for exactly what we do best.

    I've discussed this with a few admin partners and the BIND problem is something that always takes significant amounts of time to stay on top of. Seems the timing is right for either a code fork, or more effort on alternatives. I don't like the licensing sound of dbj-dns, so I don't think that's the answer. It's not really clear what the license is.

    Something that has an application front-end with a database back-end would provide better security and other features. The dbase could be replicated to off-line servers for redundancy in case of faults. This could also be used for load-balancing and backups as well. The front-end for administration could be web-based with a php or perl api for ease of expanding the application. I'd be interested in seeing active development on this project and would definitely contribute. Note that MySQL is GPL, so the potential for this type of thing happening again would be eliminated.

    I tend to agree that Oracle is the best, but small companies cannot afford its ridiculous prices for a small web site or even large one. As you will see here, a small department in NASA even had to switch from Oracle to MySQL due to budgetary constraints.....

    I just have to rave about the database replication included with MySQL, what a fantastic feature. If you are interested in setting up replication yourself, you should read the nice tutorial on it over at PHPBuilder. The tutorial can be found here.

    The replication feature has been changed a little since the tutorial was written, so you may want to check out the documentation at the MySQL site. Here's a copy of my own /etc/my.cnf file from both machines, which are setup for 2-way replication, for reference (perhaps I'll get around to posting a tutorial of my own later today on The Linux Pimp

    Main server /etc/my.cnf file
    [mysqld]
    log-bin
    master-host=ip_address_of_backup
    master-user=replicate
    master-password=your_password
    server-id=1

    Backup server /etc/my.cnf file
    [mysqld]
    log-bin
    master-host=ip_address_of_main_server

    Don't you just love the way MySQL gives reasons not to use SQL features they don't support? And not just foreign keys, either, but transactions as well, among other things. Yeah, yeah, yeah, there's now rudimentary transaction support via BDB. Not that I'd trust any important data to something that is considered "rudimentary".

    Then again, some people just have to reinvent the wheel several times over. One could wish that MySQL would just go away, in favor of more mature products that are also "Free". It won't happen anytime soon, but we can dream.

    I was really hoping that proper foreign key support would be added by know but was dissappointed to see it missing from the list. I decided to see if it was in the TODO list and was surprised to see full foreign key support in the Things that have to be done sometime section instead of the Things that should be in 4.0 or the Things that must done in the real near future sections. So it looks like full foreign key support won't be around till 5.0 or later. *sigh*

    Lack of full foreign key support (and maybe transactions) is the only reason I don't consider mySQL a proper relational database management system as it claims sinceit doesn't enforce relationships via referential integrity checks. In many large complex applications, having referential checks built into the DB is very useful and it would be a great boon if mySQL had this functionality.
