Re:I can't see this ever working in the US
buy your own domain, set up e-mail aliases. www.namezero.com

Re:Erosion
Good god yes. My mom started a business and decided to use email@att.net as the address for the business. She wrote a book and that e-mail address is in the book. Now she can never ever ever stop paying AT&T. Meanwhile, I drop $15/year and I can give everybody different addresses (yourcompany@mydomain.com) so that if somebody spams me I can redirect that address back to them. I could just block it, but it's more fun to redirect it's destination to abuse@yourcompany.com.
Life is good. No spam, complete control, easier filtering (mailing lists automatically filtered to specific folders), no more fear. Aaah. -
Serious FUD...This is such serious FUD. Namezero, a DNS hosting service that redirects over 1 million domains, recently switched to Win2000 probably because MS "suggested it would be a good idea."
MS is just dying for this kind of FUD and BS. So, the netcraft study shows many IIS sites. What about all the virtually hosted sites Apache runs?

Re:Please bear in mind....Is this a bad thing?
Personally, I am impressed with countries that, both do the .co.au sort of deal with their TLD, and restrict the useage of the domain. Up until recently, .ca was restricted, in that only registered companies and organizations could get a .ca domain, and each could only get one. (until the registry was taken over by CIRA). How, since it's a free-for-all, it will probably get cluttered by companies buying out every single word in the dictionary, just like .com/.net/.org ... .cx and .toI support the idea of only giving companies and registered organizations domains, and in that case, giving each only one. It encourages the use of subdomains, and it doesn't litter the namespace with useless domains, whose only purpose is because the domain was avaliable. (Free registration services like Name Zero make this even worse). If you really want a domain, register a company (as i was going to do to obtain a
.ca) The cluttering of the .com/.net/.org namespace has almost rendered the DNS system a bit impotent.Just my $0.02

i've looked at love from both sides now. from win and lose, and still somehow...

Hey Rob, salshdot.org is doing you a favor
salshdot.org just uses namezero which gives him a free domain name in exchange for that banner ad. He isn't gaining any profit from that. You should be thankful because this guy is bringing in the people who can't spell to your site.

Re:This pisses CmdrTaco off?Someone mentioned slahsdot.org being registered via Namzero...
Let me clarify something so anyone can direct their Cmdr Taco empathy & ire at what I see are the correct targets, the abusive domain holder (squatter) and not the helpful squatter or registrar/service.
NameZero allows you to register a domain for free. That domain resolves to their custom DNS servers which puts a (relatively) small frame at the bottom which displays their logo, a random banner ad, and a control panel. The NameZero domain owner chooses a URL in their account setup to redirect their domain to a "real" page (slahsdot.org -> slashdot.org in this case) utilizing the control panel
The NameZero service (with the frames that seem to burn Cmdr's ass) essentially does nothing more than map a domain they resolve DNS for to the domain holder's content. The frame stays until you go to a new URL via the location field or use a bookmark, otherwise it redirects all links you click on etc through their DNS so the frame stays since it assumes you are still within "slahsdot.org". Even that is customizable by the domain holder...
The ad banner click-thru abuse is minimal as the frame loads only once and doesn't benefit anyone but NameZero, once for the ad hit, and for an indefinite time for the exposure of their service via the frame til the surfer goes elsewhere.
So, it really depends on how the typosquatter uses the domain. Redirects and services such as NameZero's that are useful and of no real benefit to the squatter are cool IMHO, but someone using a typodomain to fuel their ad banner hits/moneyshot by abusing it is "pretty slimey" as Taco puts it.

Re:Good thing I use Dotster...I've been curious about sites like that. It's the same as easyhosting.com. they claim to charge $15 a year for domain registration. If you go with them do you have to be hosted there as well? Or is it just $15 a year domain registration with no strings attatched?
I've also seen this site around, which lets you register domains for free, provided you have a frame at the bottom displaying their ads: http://www.namezero.com/

Re:Free Registrar
NameZero is a good alternative in that you register the domain name for free now, which can also be hosted (with banner ads). The domain is really registered to NameZero, which can be bought for a pro-rated cost.
