"Students and teachers should get brand new Lamborgini Diablos, since it's for EDUCATION! I don't understand why Lamborgini doesn't want schools to be stealing them... what a bunch of money hoarding whores. They are worse then HITLER!@"
Ummm... I'm sorry, but "Education" doesn't make schools and teachers any less responsible to follow the law. Even more so, in fact, since they are setting an example for students.
Free software is great and all. It's great that an author of software can release it under GNU for the "good of humanity", etc. However, in return for everybody respecting those wishes, people must respect the wishes of others.
If MSFT wants people to pay for their product, that should be respected. They are in it to make money, and responsible to their shareholders. For a group of people who are outraged with MSFT for trashing open source software, I'm amazing with how much hipocracy they will turn the insult the opposite direction.
If these schools are unwilling to pay for proper licences, simply DON'T USE THE SOFTWARE. Use StarOffice! Use Notepad! Write their own software! I really don't care... but, indicating that a company should be forced into involentary charity is unreasonable and irresponsible. Especially when it's the tax collected from Microsoft's products, and income tax from their employees that pays for things like the public school system to begin with.

Is this a bad thing?
Personally, I am impressed with countries that, both do the.co.au sort of deal with their TLD, and restrict the useage of the domain. Up until recently,.ca was restricted, in that only registered companies and organizations could get a.ca domain, and each could only get one. (until the registry was taken over by CIRA). How, since it's a free-for-all, it will probably get cluttered by companies buying out every single word in the dictionary, just like.com/.net/.org....cx and.to
I support the idea of only giving companies and registered organizations domains, and in that case, giving each only one. It encourages the use of subdomains, and it doesn't litter the namespace with useless domains, whose only purpose is because the domain was avaliable. (Free registration services like Name Zero make this even worse). If you really want a domain, register a company (as i was going to do to obtain a.ca) The cluttering of the.com/.net/.org namespace has almost rendered the DNS system a bit impotent.

... as I see it. I, personally, am not a fan of censoring the internet, but that's not here nor there. It's just plain wrong to expect foregn organizations, based in foregn countries (in this case, Yahoo!) to conform to their laws. If the french government wishes to enforce their laws on the internet, the only really justified manner (besides ensuring that domestic content is complient) would be to set up a nationwide firewalling system to block out non-complient sites, much like China has. Would this be dumb? Yes (again, i'm not a fan of censorship), but it would be the only justified action. They can NOT police their laws on the rest of the world. Thus enters the whole concept of a "Country".
Trying to force Yahoo! to comply to their local laws seems equally as dumb as the whole iCraveTV fiasco (as iCraveTV, based in Canada, were complying to the Canadian telecommunication laws by rebrodcasting television caught with an antenna). The US is free to set up a nationwide firewall, also.

Why did RSA Security release the RSA algorithm into the public domain early? So much misinformation has been spread recently regarding the expiration of the RSA algorithm patent that the company wanted to create an opportunity to state the facts. RSA Security's commercialization of the RSA patent helped create an entire industry of highly secure, interoperable products that are the foundation of the worldwide online economy. Releasing the RSA algorithm into the public domain now is a symbolic next step in the evolution of this market, as it will help cement the position of RSA encryption as the standard in all categories of wired and wireless applications and devices. RSA Security intends to continue to offer the world's premier implementation of the RSA algorithm and all other relevant encryption technologies in our RSA BSAFE software solutions and remains confident in our leadership in the encryption market.

Personally, I think that Digital Convergence will listen to Radioshack a little more attentively then it will to me. For one thing, Radioshack stands something to lose from having boycotting customers and should act on their behalf. Digital Convergence, on the other hand, makes no direct money off of me, so is under no real obligation to listen to me. However, if Radioshack threatened to pull their scanner, which i assume they pay nice sums of money for, then Digital Convergence would have to listen. I think this would probably be a more productive way to approach this problem.

Actually, in that case (as has been discussed many times on slashdot), she had good reason to sue. The reason we think of her as some idiot spilling coffee on herself is a successful PR spin by McDonalds.
As you can see at this page, entitled the actual facts of the mcdonalds coffee case, the coffee was quite overly hot. This is beyond the hot you expect coffee - it was served at between 180 and 190 F (most places serve it at about 140). This was enough to burn through her sweatpants and cause 3rd degree burns to 6% of her body, including some very tender spots. She required $20k in reconstructive plastic surgery. If the coffee was even at 155 F, she would have avoided serious injury. Initially, she asked McD's for just the money to cover the surgery, but when she refused and discovered over 700 claims from between 1980 and 1992, including cases of 3rd degree burns, she did the full-out lawsuit. Also, the jury found her 20% at fault, which is why she only got $160k of the $200k awarded to her. Since that time, the temperature of the coffee at that peticular McD's has been dropped to 158 F.

As a start of action towards this, I've decided to boycott Radioshack entirely, and make my peers do so as well (since they use this technology and are the ones giving out the scanner). I am also writing a firmly worded letter to various Radioshack email addresses expressing my displeasure, my intention to boycott them for competeters, and encouraging them to pressure Digital Convergence into stopping this nonsense. I encourage others to do likewise.

hmph... actually, slackware does have a packaging system. (i'm a slackware bigot running 7.1). It uses files in the.tgz format, and can be made to include installation scripts. Slackware comes with tools to build, install, and remove them (installpkg, makepkg, pkgtool), as well as a neat little tool for converting RPMs to the slackware format - rpm2targz... i've been playing with packages somewhat recently because i managed to mangle my previous (slackware) install by playing with XFree86 4. Slackware format packages seem to be quite a bit easier to build then RPMs.
My slackware machine is a 486/50, so slack really impresses me over Redhat and such because it's relivitely small, even fully installed. Also, coming in disk sets, it's easy for me to leave out KDE and associated tools, or LaTeX and install it later (instead of having to find it in a huge list, as is the case with Redhat). According to securityfocus (whose page layout makes baby Jesus cry), it seems to be one of the more secure Linux distros out there. Finally, as noted by the parent poster, the BSD-style startup scripts are nice.
-legolas

I have a 486/50 that i use as my personal machine (i'm a po' university student) running slackware Linux. In addition to being the firewall/nat server/mailserver/etc. for our home network, I also run X on it for my personal use.
I've tried a number of different window managers on it (windowmaker, afterstep, fvwm2, blackbox, etc.), and the best thing i've found so far is Enlightenment 0.16.4 w/ the Aqua theme (it has no window borders, which makes screen refreshes a lot quicker. It also looks pretty spiffy.). Enlightenment, with all the special effects turned off and without sound (i compiled it without EsounD) is really fast. I can use licq/wordperfect eight/etc. at reasonable speeds. I tried to load Gnome once... i think i saw blood start to flow from the vents of my machine and it started to scream at me to stop the pain...
Now, there is something about Enlightenment/Windowmaker/Afterstep that i really like (and is the reason i run litestep on my windows box). Personally, i find the desktop concept becomes really cluttered and ugly. I like it a lot better having all kinds of menus of programs, and having the desktop just for my programs and a nice background, and not all kinds of icons. Additionally, the flexability of E (and X in general), being able to easily customize the interface to my exact desire (with customizable themes, menus, window behaviour, virtual desktops, and so on) makes using something less flexable almost painful. Again, my personal taste.
Now, time for a statement on the topic... hmph, well, I've played with the MacOS X developers releases. Personally, i'd rather run Linux + X + aqua theme, but for people who use a computer as a means and not an end, I think MacOS X is seriously a Good Thing. It has the sweet goodness of being based on BSD (proper working multitasking, for one thing), while delivering the easyness of being a Mac. Personally, i hate MacOS 9.x and below and would rather run Windows (and i am typing this on an iBook in MacOS 9.0.4), but MacOS X seems to be far better then either for the home user market. If they made it for the x86 platform, i'm sure it would seriouly challange windows. On the other hand, perhaps it will cause a surge in sales of Apple hardware (which seems to be pretty good from my experimentation with LinuxPPC and Yellowdog)
anyways, enough out of me. if you made it this far, thanks for reading.;^)
