Like more than a dozen people actually have 1000 hours of LEGAL music. That's like 1000 CDs. Or, about $15,000 worth of CDs. Apple joins the piracy tool supporters of the world.. right on! Fight for your "freedom!"

Well, having established that the Phantom Menace was a shitty movie targeted at easily-marketable 7-year-olds, I'd like to bring your attention to a release much worthier of your attention. The Phantom Edit, as it is called, is an underground 'remix' of this movie, a remix that attempts to bring a small level of respectability, plausibility, and intelligence to this poor film.

No-one knows quite where to find a copy (seeing as it is a massive copyright violation), but I'm sure that Direct Connect, Morpheus, and WinMX users will be able to dig up a copy, somewhere.

try using Direct Connect, the best way to get movies.

Some of the servers will not allow you to connect without more than 3,6 even 9 gigs to share and x amount of slots open. What will the RIAA do when they send in their bulldogs and the automatic script kicks them for not sharing or not sharing the right kind of files ?

Or what about Filetopia with its server hosted in spain and promising "...security and privacy that provides...strong ciphers and public key techniques for all communications and sophisticated techniques to protect your IP and...make you truly anonymous and safe from attacks..."

Hmm I use Morpheus all the time, and it's definitely better than Napster, at least to find the music I'm into (triphop, d&b, lounge). On Napster I could hardly ever find any of this kind of music. I tried bearshare a while back and personally wasn't impressed at all. Another program I've been very impressed with is Direct Connect although it's mainly for movies, not mp3s.

I'm also interested to see what Ian Clarke (founder of freenet) is doing with his startup Uprizer. Clarke has hinted that uprizer will provide some kind of compensation scheme for content producers. He envisions a system where it will become very easy to become a patron. So there could be 200,000 12-year old patrons supporting a band with their pocketmoney. I think that people really don't want to rip off the artists they love. However, in this day and age, there is simply no acceptable legal means of doing so on the internet.

• One of the best alternative feature-wise is Filetopia (its userbase is relatively small).
• And for MP3s, Songspy is quite powerful.
• If you like Napster, get Napigator. It allows you to connect to OpenNap servers where any file type can be shared (and which are not concerned by any changes in Napster's business model).
• A good alternative to the Windows Napster client is FileNavigator.
• Recently reborn: CuteMX, has a lot of features but requires IE.
• Somewhat closer to Gnutella, with distributed servers: DirectConnect
• Distributed, anonymous, encrypted: Blocks
