Re:Cryptonomicon
Zodiac is a nice little present day biopunk novel as well. He's definately progressing in the classical sense, which doesn't do a whole lot of good for us as cyberpunk fans, but is instead turning a whole legion of cyberpunks into lit geeks. Course it works both ways, in my experience at least. I've been able to use Stephenson to turn a whole slew of coffee-house liberal arts majors into cyberpunk fans. Maybe if Stephenson can find someone as cool as Chris Cunningham to turn something of his into a *GOOD* film (as we all hope Neuromancer will be) then he can get a little more back than a 'thousandaire' (lol) and have some backing to tour more settings for his future writings.

Re:The OTHER reason SnowCrash won't get made
The story is complex, the sets would have to be extremely expensive and/or digital ala Episode1,
the Uneducated Masses would think it was a rip-off of The Matrix...
If anything, that would doubly damn the Neuromancer film project, as The Matrix lifts most of the names from there (the Matrix itself, Zion (without the funky rasta back-story), &c.) Well, at least Neo (k3wl name d00d) and Trinity aren't named Case and Molly..
But another thing to consider is that large portions of the book are a thinly veiled jab at L Ron Hubbard (AKA L Bob Rife).
Other than the name I don't see much similarity. Hubbard's a pulp scifi author who founded a kooky religion on a bet, whereas Rife seems to be an industrialist who rode in on the middle-American Christian power base. They could always just call him Bob L. Rife or something if the scienos complain. -
Re:William Gibson
I am a huge Gibson fan, but this episode was ATROCIOUS. It started out OK, and could have been much better perhaps if the 'mystery chick' was actually a rival hacker's avatar instead of the 'goddess'. I am really looking forward to the neuromancer flick....other than neuromancer.org does anyone know of any updates?

Neuromancer MovieNot only is Neuromancer about to be made into a movie, it also now has an official home page. William Gibson 12 is writing the script so people have some hope it will work.
Anyway, I see the All Tomorrow's Parties too has a home page.
In the newsgroup alt.cyberpunk there was a reference to an early script which was rather different from the book. Incidentally, the new book has been discussed at some length there already, you may wish to pop in to have look.

Re:Solution: Shadowrun: The Movie
The computing-by-datajack is conceivable to many. Take a comp-skilled Shadowrunner , and givie him a deal gone bad w/ a corp.
Hmmm, the scenario you just described has already been done.
The book is called 'Neuromancer' and the movie will have the same title.
And it's been around longer than Shadowrunner. I believe that all of Shadowrunner's hacker and cyberspace references are borrowed from Gibson's ideas.
And yes, Pi kicked ass.
Nothing can possiblai go wrong. Er...possibly go wrong.
Strange, that's the first thing that's ever gone wrong. -
The Neuromancer Movie
If anyone's interested...
here is the website for the Neuromancer film.
It's being directed by Chris Cunningham, the man behind those cool Aphex Twin filmclips and the recent Bjork filmclip for 'All is Full Of Love' among other things.
