.net Domain Up For Grabs
belmolis writes " The New York Times is reporting that the bidding is on for the .net domain currently administered by VeriSign. VeriSign's current contract expires June 30th; applications are due today. Three companies are known to be interested: NeuStar, which currently manages .biz, Afilias, which manages .info, and Denic eG, a non-profit that manages the German .de domain. ICANN is bending over backward to avoid any suggestion of bias due to its conflict with VeriSign over VeriSign's Site Finder "service" and has appointed an independent team to evaluate the applications. VeriSign has been lobbying hard to keep the domain and is reported to have received letters of support from Microsoft and IBM." -
Registering a Locality Based .US Domain?
waffle zero asks: "I've been looking for a simple domain to host personal photos and journals. I gave up on getting a .COM or .NET TLD and started looking into one like firstnamelastname.ny.us. NeuStar manages the .US TLD and sub-domains like los-angeles.ca.us are run by third parties (mostly regional ISPs and universities). My local municipality is a small city so there is no 'delegated zone'. The only ones I have seen frequently are of the form k12.ny.us used by primary schools. I would like to hear users experiences working with locality based domains and what it would take to run one for my area." -

More .us Domain Problems?
possible asks: "My .us domain registrations supposedly went through on April 27th 2002. However, even though register.com's .us FAQ states that you can use their Domain Manager to edit addresses, aliases, MX records, and SOA's for your .us domain, I have not been able to do ANYTHING yet. When I called their technical support on May 1st, they basically said "This is Neustar's fault, in the meantime we have to do everything manually." So I had them set up my MX and name records over the phone. 6 days later, I'm still unable to resolve my domains. Today I called register.com again they told me 'Somehow your zone file got corrupted, you have to realize that .us domains are a new thing and it's not going smoothly for many people.' Some of my friends are having similar .us problems with different registrars. Is anyone else having problems with their .us domains? Does anyone know what the underlying problem is?" -
Consumer Groups Decry 'Dot-US' Policies
JThaddeus writes: "The Washington Post reports that nonprofits are complaining about how NeuStar Inc. registered '.us' names on a first-come, first-served basis. 'While NeuStar did set aside some generic names, such as parks.us and kids.us, several nonprofit groups accused the company of making those decisions arbitrarily.' Some of these names have policy implications."
