Re:From what I understand...
Not sure...
You can get an overview here: http://www.nhra.com/aboutnhr/classes.htm
Drag racing is not my specialty. -
Re:Now it should be obvious, but...
You can get 7,500 HP from a 500ci engine, but it'll only last about 5 seconds. Oh yeah, and you need to be burning nitromethane at a rate of 85 gal/min (1.5 gal/sec, 20 gal/mile) with a huge supercharger that takes 400 HP to turn. Here are some examples. -
Drag RacingI've always been a huge fan of Indy cars (back when it was CART), F1, rally, and road-racing. Drag racing has never really interested me. Until, that is, I found out a little more about the technology.
Some factoids ripped from the NHRA site:
nitromethane-powered engines of NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars produce approximately 8,000 horsepower
Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars use between 10 and 12 gallons of fuel for a complete pass, including the burnout, backup to the starting line, and quarter-mile run
the fuel-line pressure for NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars is between 400 and 500 pounds which translates into 65 gallons of fuel per minute
it takes just 15/100ths of a second for all 8,000 horsepower of an NHRA Top Fuel dragster engine to reach the rear wheels
Not from that site, but I recall an factoid that a top fueler pumps enough air on a single 1/4 mile run to inflate the Goodyear Blimp. -

Depends on which race.

Re:Random fact...
NHRA is not the state, so it isn't a license regardless what they call it. An NHRA "license" doesn't allow one to drive on the street and actually, the criteria aren't that stringent, you simply have to demonstrate solo that you can point your car in a straight line and drive. Licence app

Re:From zero to twenty in 9.8 seconds!Hmmmm. Haven't seen too many of them at the dragstrips lately. Does that tell you anything?
Yeah, that the NHRA acceptable fuels list doesn't include electricity or batteries...

Re:Amazing performance
Wired Magazine had a great article about these cars. Their performance often outpaces gas-powered dragsters and they don't make noise.
Street cars, yes. NHRA dragsters, um no. Look at these results. Top Fuel dragsters are faster than "jet cars" in the 1/4 mile. They burn 7 gallons of fuel in less than 4 seconds and have speeds of over 200+MPH at the finish line.
Don't get me wrong, electric toy dragsters sound like fun, but they are not THAT fast.
