Not the Scientists!
An impartial judicial body is needed in this case.
Clearly, any group of scientists that stand to PROFIT from this endeavor (in terms of both money and fame) should not make the decision to go ahead with this technology.
Unfortunately, technology is advancing much more rapidly than the applicable ethical bodies. More resources need to be devoted to those efforts, before things get out of hand.

Desensitization is scariest
I'm an American student studying in London for the year. When I first got here I was surprised, and scared, by the number of CCTV cameras they have here. You are ALWAYS on tape! At first it's uncomfortable and eery, but soon after that, the cameras blend in and you forget about them. You also become desensitized in general; I probably am a lot less apalled by the idea of all the CCTVs now than I was then.
Being desensitized to this type of issue is a serious problem. This DNA database will probably provoke some protests and outrage at first, which will gradually die down, after which everyone will forget about it and grow accustomed to it as a part of life. That's why it's important to protect your freedom beforehand. Otherwise, it will be slowly eroded without anyone really recognizing what's going on.
It doesn't matter what the issue is: freedom, guns, privacy. Think twice before you give up your rights!!

Why Give Jobs a Free Ride?
Jobs says that Apple has screwed up and immediately everybody drops what they're doing to praise him; "Oh look at that, he takes responsibility for his failures."
In the meantime, everyone overlooks the fact that, for all his flash and style, he has made a number of serious errors in terms of Apple's direction.
OS X represents a true chance for Apple to get back in the ball game. But for some reason, I'm worried that Jobs is thinking about what color to make the new desktops instead.

Welcome to my lair
Chandra X-Ray Observatory is a name that just sounds like one of Dr. Evil's super-secret lairs.

Where's Gore?
Where's the "inventor" of the Internet? It seems that he should be most comfortable in this forum.
I am anxiously awaiting his answers.

Re:Wha?
After reading through the questions and answers, am I the only one who gets the odd feeling that the candidates -- but the Shrub especially -- has no sense (at least from their answers) that they're writing for Slashdot's audience? (Or, worse yet, that they even know what Slashdot is? Or that, yeah, Slashdot is, um, actually on this "thing" called the "web"?)
That's an asinine complaint. It's a good thing that the candidates did not craft some specially concocted set of answers for Slashdot.
Do you want to be pandered to?

Not worth the cash!
No way that a PSX2 is worth a G. You gotta remember that Microsoft is going to be busting out the Xbox (complete w/$500 million marketing budget) in the near future.
Unless you have money that you burn, save it for a cheaper PSX2 or Xbox.

Thank God for Jon Katz!
Great post Jon.
I hadn't decided who to vote for yet, but that post really sent the message home and I'm definitely going to vote for Gore now.
Thanks for letting me know that Bush was an idiot, I hadn't noticed. In fact, I guess I was just trying to make an educated decision based on their proposed policies as well as their character and experience...Geesh, I guess that was silly wasn't it! Oh well, luckily I saw your post in time!
Please keep posting more stories like that one. It was well thought out, researched, and --most importantly-- it was very fair and unbiased.
Keep up the great work!

Not bad at all
Those aren't bad at all. I think that they look fairly sleek.
Not only that, but the border-like piece seems to have a functional justification; it will move to prop up the keyboard, support the laptop, or act as a handle. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Can you say 'Flat Tax'?
Is anyone surprised by this?
Ross Perot and other hundred-millionaires don't pay taxes either.
So why is everyone so against a flat-tax (with a minimum income requirement)?
