We currently run FreeBSD on all are web servers and I can assure you its one stable puppy. I can believe the nine year thing. Get a good fast machine put FreeBSD on it and subject it to a light to moderate load and it will run forever. When we first got started we experimented with Linux and OpenBSD but we found that FreeBSD was more stable and never needed a reboot. It would be my guess that if you compared all the Unixes head to head FreeBSD would come out on top. I mean its no wonder all the other big sites use it like Yahoo etc... Try running nine years on NT. I think FreeBSD is great and it sure hasn't given us any trouble. I don't care if can run gnome or KDE because we are using it as a server and a GUI is pointless and a waste of resources. If you want a GUI get windows.

What happened to Jini or Java or whatever? Besides whats the point of networking all of your appliances together. It seems like a big waste of time to me. I mean so you want to make a couple of pieces of toast or warm up a bowl of soup in your microwave. What are you going to do? Hop on your computer wait for it to boot up and then program the silly microwave to cook for 2 minutes on high?
This is ridiculous. Of course not. Appliances need networking like I need another hole in my head. Why can't we find more useful things to put the efforts of our brightest minds at.

So whats next are people going to be able to give birth to their pets!?? Some of this stuff people do in the name of science is really absurd. Most of it is good though because it helps our medical fields etc... The question is where to draw the line. My thought for the day is that we need moderation in all things even in science. Fanatical behaviour is more destructive than productive. I think though that are generation is overly obsessed with technology and all its implications. What happened to the good old days of horse breeding and raising chickens. Of course there are some obvious benefits that come with technological innovation but then there are also a lot of downsides. In conclusion, I'm not even sure what I wanted to say. I started out with this great idea in my head and now I'm just sort of bantering about with a lot of philosophical mumble jumble. Ok enough said. My favorite site of the day was of course www.npsis.net. They have got the sweetest little deal on their site and I'm sure their facing some rough and tough competition from the big boys. I love these little internet sites that have the gumption to rock the boat a little and make these big corporations start to sweat. Kudos to them. Last of all I would like to mention that the year 2000 is coming fast and I would personally urge all of you to at least have a 72 hour emergency kit or something on hand with enough cash to survive for at least 2 weeks. I might be wrong but you can never be to careful. Out yall...
