Disingenuous or just ignorant?
I would think that we would defer heavily to a decision made by an organization made up entirely of science teachers.
Have you actually read their letter? The more you know... -
Crazy. How, exactly, will students in Kansas be better educated when they have less access to information?
How also can they deny Kansas fair use quotation of parts of their standards documents?
Oh wait, it gets worse!
Therefore, despite much outstanding material contained in the standards, we have no choice but to ask the KSBE to refrain from referencing or quoting from NSTA Pathways in the KSES.
Refrain from REFERENCING them? That's nuts, out of control.

Surprising you've never heard of "Texas"
The "religion right" has no influence in our schools (thanks to the Supreme Court).
Sorry, but you're both wrong and naive here. There are quite a few Wingnut-Americans on local and state school boards, and school boards have a strong influence on schools. The state of Texas has done a lot to water down science and health education by refusing to buy 'unacceptable' textbooks, and Texas is such a large market that most publishers don't bother making a second edition that leaves the science in. It's not just religion, business is also getting into the act.
Definitely agree that many parents are falling down in their responsibility to prepare their kids for schools and to raise their kids in an environment that values education.
(I boggle at the other post who feels that "teacher's unions" are interchangable with "parents".) -
Bush's science advisorIt's interesting to note that Bush's own science advisor, John Marburger, earlier this year stated: "Intelligent Design is not a scientific theory.", and "I don't regard Intelligent Design as a scientific topic.". Yet Marburger's boss seems to be under the illusion that it is and that it deserves and equal footing in schools. Tsk, I hope Bush isn't promoting relativism, I thought conservatives opposed relativism,
;-).Good to see that the American Geophysical Union and the National Science Teachers Association have criticized Bush's statements on ID. I wish more scientific and professional organisations would do the same.

The real issue...
Who cares about recorded lessons? The real issue is, does a student have a right to remember or use, let alone share any information gained from a lecture (or a book or whatever) without written permission from the lecturer (or the author or whatever)? After all, isn't that protected IP?
I mean, just think about it... The student might some day be a lecturer himself, so what right does he have to distribute the IP he may have memorized?
I wonder why for example NSTA hasn't taken such a firm stand on IP issues, like MPAA and RIAA have. Such lackluster attitude towards these serious issues will undermine the future of modern society! -
Ding ding ding! A winner!
I'd wager 99+% of the Earth's heat comes from the Sun.
You'd win that bet. Earth's internal heat amounts to about 60-90 milliwatts per square meter. (Google is your friend)
