Open Source
So has Microsoft retracted their stand on Open Source being a a cancer? They can't possibly stick to that story, specially after so many organizations are seeing the benefits of Open Source. Will MS really and their fanboys ever learn?

Re:not as good a design as your claiming
SUN is eyeing the entry into the larger mid to upper end business market thru Linux on Ultrasparc
From this I can only assume that you don't have a clue what you are talking about. Sun are already a player in the "mid to upper end business market" and have been for the past 20 years. Their current marketing strategy suggests that they aren't particularly interested in Linux either, having recently pushed out OpenSolaris (not that I don't wish they would start pushing Linux in some sort of useful way :( ). -
The Best License escheme Yet is CDDL
CDDL is the license used by the solaris proyect, it doesnt kidnap yuor rights, also enables you to make fully commercial use of your work, and if you desires keep your work free. Open Solaris CDDL http://www.opensolaris.org/os/licensing/

Re:I ditched debian over the weekend
I concur with the AC from what I've heard about older hardware. You will need about 6-10Gb on your hdd for a typical full install - the hardware you indicate should be okay to run as long as you have enough RAM, just don't expect to run circles around the new hardware.
;)
x86 suppport for strange hardware is not currently as good as Linux, but, like Linux, this only matters if you have that strange hardware.
Give it a try. I first tried Solaris last December/January and I've just recently converted all of my Linux installs to Solaris 10. IMHO, Solaris 10 runs circles around Linux. Also look into OpenSolaris.org. -
Re:He is quite right
I have patched various machines with little kernel fixes (adding PCI_ID's to support the i810 chipset).
Ugh. Solaris uses a configuration file to map device IDs to drivers, which I like much better. I don't want to have to recompile critical system files for trivial changes. You can make changes on the fly, too.
See http://opensolaris.org/ if you want Solaris OS source code. If you want to make changes that get included back into the source tree, you need a Sun kernel developer as a sponsor for now. The applications you mentioned fixing are just as open source on Solaris as on Linux though. -
What about your fiirst born?
They already did that*.

Re:When I choose ___ OS, it is because...The OpenSolaris license is the CDDL. It is not a viral license like the GPL
Too bad they fucked up the Sun Contributor Agreement
2. You hereby assign to Sun joint ownership in all worldwide common law and statutory rights associated with the copyrights, copyright applications and copyright registrations in Your Contribution, to the extent allowable under applicable local laws and copyright conventions, and agree never to assert against Sun any "moral rights" therein. You understand that
(i) this Agreement may be submitted by Sun to register a copyright in Your Contribution, and
(ii) Sun may exercise all rights as a copyright owner of Your Contribution. This Agreement supersedes and replaces all prior copyright assignments for Contributions made by You to Sun. Neither party has any duty whatsoever to render an accounting to the other party for any use of a Contribution.
If I contribute to Linux, I don't have to assign the copyright to Linus. -

Re:10kHz in 1996
FYI, the comment is in param.c, and is quite explicitly referring to the performance of the system clock, not the CPU clock. The amusing part about his statement is that modern OS X machines actually produce a hires clock signal in the nanosecond range, although I'm unsure about the actual precision of that clock. It's quite possible that Macs use a capacitor sub-clock to produce a more accurate (but less precise) signal.

Re:Solaris Source Code...
1) Simple answer: YES
2) From a CDDL standpoint, I think so, but you might not be able to from a GNU standpoint:
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/about/faq/licensing_ faq/#dual-licensing
Read up on the copyleft in the CDDL, it might be sufficient for your needs.
3) Solaris, at some point, is intended to be a distro of OpenSolaris. Sun will support Solaris. Other distros based on OpenSolaris will have their own support mechanisms. -
Re:any interest in Apple PPC?
Check out the discussion forum at PowerPC port of OpenSolaris. Cyril Plisko is a name to watch for.

Re:Rock on!
Wasn't there still some problem like the DRI DRM not being ported or something?
DRI & DRM are not yet ported, but are being worked on. Without them you lose some hardware acceleration. (Though you don't need them for full hardware acceleration on nVIDIA cards if you use nVIDIA's recently released Solaris x86/x64 driver.)
This [link to Phil Brown's community agpgart driver] didn't work for me when I tried a few months back.
Solaris now includes its own agpgart driver, based in part on Phil's driver, as of the Solaris development build released today, and provides the source as well in OpenSolaris - see http://cvs.opensolaris.org/source/xref/usr/src/ut

This part is just filler to overcome the Slashdot lameness filter. I tried putting the links on just one line, which was a mess. I tried adding filler text to the end of each line, which was a mess. Now I am just adding useless text. It has taken me longer to overcome the Slashdot lameness filter than it took to write my post in the first place. I don't see any point to this, since the people who want to post crap are still able to do it, by adding text to the end, like I am doing. Also, moderation can do a better job. So, instead of making honest posters like me jump through hoops, how about doing something useful, like adding a "-2" moderation level, which can only be assigned by official Slashdot admins (to avoid abuse by the astroturfers etc.) to hide the real crap. Then I could browse at "-1" to see the valid opinions that have been modded down as trolls, without running into the pornographic crap. People who wanted to reach "-2" to check for abuse should be able to select it manually, of course. But, if Slashdot still wants to have a lameness filter, then how about giving me a way to override it, without having to mess up the site with this useless filler. -

I wonder if the Sun Studio 10 Compilers can be used to compile Linux? Sun went out of their way to make Solaris compile with gcc. -
FSF weighs in: this is NOT GPL-COMPATIBLEThe Free Software Foundation lists the OpenSolaris CDDL as a GPL-Incompatible, Free Software License
Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL)
See also the OpenSolaris Licensing page
This is a free software license which is not a strong copyleft; it has some complex restrictions that make it incompatible with the GNU GPL. That is, a module covered by the GPL and a module covered by the CDDL cannot legally be linked together. We urge you not to use the CDDL for this reason.
Also unfortunate in the CDDL is its use of the term "intellectual property". -
