Re:12V powerIf it likes 12 volts then this will be perfect because any old deep cycle battery can then power the thing which means I can use it off grid. My Hawker battery cost over $400 bux. This drives a UPS which puts out 120 volts AC which goes into a switching power supply which puts out 5 & 12 volts DC. I think there are some optimizations which can take place here.

Buy a better power supply
Your problem is not the board - it's the crappy way you are trying to power it. Get a board that provides a regulated 12VDC rail - Opus Solutions have some nice boards, Mini Box also have some nice stuff which is aimed at the Car PC enthusiast. If you are using one of the really cheap Morex boards that require a regulated 12VDC input then you have the wrong PSU for the job.

Not suitable for cars - but Opus have the best
This device is not suitable for cars. The specs state that it requires 12VDC in to operate - it's not uncommon for a vehicle to run at 13.8VDC, and there are of course issues with power spikes from the ignition system.
There are some 12V PSU's outthere (either morex or cubid from memory) that use the 12VDC supply rail and pass it straight through to the motherboards 12VDC rail. Stick some spikes down that line and you could zap something important.
If you want to power a computer in a vehicle, then the best stuff I have seen is from Opus Solutions who make excellent PSU's for in-vehicle use. They support a wide input voltage range, have automatic low power shutdown, and can be configured to start the computer when the car has been running for a set delay, and shutdown the computer when the ignition has been switched off for a certain amount of time.

The package mentioned in the article includes software. You are not just paying $1200 for a box, you get the GPS software and the OS installed and configured. Also have any of you considered the whole issue with system power? If you notice there are not any AC outlet in your car. If you are considering a invert then you now have two heat sources to cool, plus you have to worry about draining your battery. These specialized systems come with DC to DC (because the computer PS just turns AC to DC anyway) power supplies that can sense when you power off your car. They also will shut the system down if they sense a low battery. If you want more power check out these PIII and PIV systems:

You are still talking $2000 to $3000 for complete system (including the touch screen), but now you have a much more powerful computer. -
Better options
Personally I am looking forward to the release of this system from here. It doesn't have full specs, but it does include a power supply that monitors the input signals from the car and can perform power management functions.
I have been looking into this for a while, and the one linked does seem nice, and the same company makes some higher end models in case 266MHz isn't enough.
