Re:flame away, but...
Don't give up! Google! I can only point you to German guides, but I am shure that there are guides in english as well. In order to install Windows 8.1 over 8.0 on my gf laptop, I had to download the iso from the windows app store, burn it and do a complete install.
It is possible, it is legal, it is just annoyingly diificult and awkward to get it done. German version here, you may succeed if you use google translate or you may find the description in english elsewhere: http://www.pcwelt.de/tipps/Set...
And if you do succeed - please feel obliged to share it here. Windows 8.0 is an ungly mess, Windows 8.1 is slightly better, so people should know how to do it, if oss is no solution.

Re:It has to do with the culture of the sport
Ignore the German guy and jump to around 30 seconds: http://www.pcwelt.de/index.cfm?pid=573&pk=69698&fk=1747296
That's a state run "world class gymnast" factory in the worst sense of the word: the production is high and those who don't make it are cast aside like a microchip which failed the automated tests.
Can you argue that such a system would be acceptable in a western country?
You've obviously never been anywhere near China. -
Re:This presumes that IPV6 is a good idea
For further info, look at the bottom of this page in PCWelt: http://www.pcwelt.de/index.cfm?pid=839&pk=51740&p=5; it describes it nicely.

Re:TROLL ALERT! WINDOWS TROLL ALERT!!!
[grin] Better yet, my antique WFWG (Win3.11) setup, which required neither a firewall nor any particular caution, and was used 5 years online without a single intrusion (finally retired after 7 rock-stable years of hard use). Security through braindeadness.
:)
Sometimes you gotta wonder about M$... I think the coding teams probably DO care about security (and tear their hair out regularly as vulnerabilities are discovered despite their best efforts). But it's likely several things: M$ tries to evolve their software toward consumer demand, and that usually means the glitz that sells is more important, at least to the marketing types who drive business these days, than the back-end stuff only geeks know about (like weeding out every buffer overflow in 50 kazillion lines of code -- yeah, right!) Second, the codebase is just too big for ANYONE, no matter how good, to get everything right, and I suspect often suffers from both it's-still-half-baked-but-marketing-said-ship-it, and Too-Many-Cooks-who-never-met-one-another.
Frex, that major vulnerability in XP's SP2 (http://www.pcwelt.de/know-how/extras/103039/ -- has there been a /. story about that yet?) which apparently was also in Win95. Was it the same TYPE of error, or was it an old chunk of Win95 codebase that happened to find the right conditions to resurface as a problem?

Response time for AV vendors
After viewing this thread I noticed that Clam AV came up quite a bit. So I went to their website and went to the news section. From there I saw a link for PC worlds response times articles. Here is the original article in german. Clam AV is #5, but the AV program I use frequently is BitDefender, which is ranked #2. I use BitDefender because they have a LiveCD that is a remastered version of Knoppix which is a Live CD based off of Debian Linux. BitDefenders scan engine can also scan Microsoft Windows partitions (to include FULL RW support for NTFS). The only thing missing from my recovery pack is a spyware scanner that runs under linux and will remove windows based spyware. ~ryan

Re:Which office suite?
The article really states nothing more than "an Open Source office package." This article seems to suggest OpenOffice, but any other articles I have read do not give a definitive answer. I would expect them to use OpenOffice, though... there are not really any alternatives, especially when it comes to dealing with MS Office documents, are there?

Re:screenshots HERE!

Re:Protecting against Windows XP?

A load of hype
Why is it that everybody goes crazy when MP3 or similar triggerwords are mentioned?
Presentation of MP3 hardware or software is not banned from CeBIT according to these articles from c't and (German) PC-World. A link to the trade-show itself is utterly useless, since they only give out details to "accredited journalists".
What really happened is (according to above articles) that they don't want the consumer oriented presentation that Creative was going to give, since the consumer part of CeBIT has been relegated to CeBIT Home, another show altogether. They don't want the unwashed masses at the "real" CeBIT to give the suits and geeks some space to breathe.
So it is not the WHAT they banned, it's the HOW. -
