A Microbe's-Eye View of Beer

Maybe not, but after nine years of work and five million dollars, Michael Davidson of Florida State University has created a website of microscopic proportions that will satiate anyone's curiosity. His site, MolecularExpressions.com has galleries full of images of ordinary materials under extraordinary magnification. The list of materials includes beers from around the world, popular cocktails, snoopy and many more. The site has a wealth of images that are well worth a look. CNN has a brief description of the site and the work that went into it, but feel free to skip that and just gaze at an Irish favorite." Exploding Star May Be Seen From Earth
fjordboy writes "The star Rho Cas, which can be seen by the naked eye from the Northern Hemisphere, is showing signs that it may be exploding in the near future. Rho exploded in 2000, creating a cloud of gas over 10,000 times the size of earth (which isn't all that large in space scales), however, the same star is showing signs of collapsing which may point to a much larger explosion in the near future, which should be large enough to be seen by backyard astronomers with little to no specialized equipment. Violent Games Good for Kids
fjordboy writes "Scholars from MIT, the University of California in LA, and the University of London have worked together to oppose laws restricting children from playing violent video games. The battle is currently taking place in the US Court of Appeals and the case seems to hold a decent amount of merit. From Vnunet:"Experts on childhood and adolescence have long recognised the importance of violent fantasy play in overcoming anxieties, processing anger, and providing outlets for aggression." U.S. East Coast Bombarded By ... What?

Too bad I missed it :("The loyal fjordboy writes: "At about 6:30 EST this evening, many meteors broke apart and headed south coming from Canada. I was able to witness the meteor flying overhead in Trout Run, PA and it was spectacular. There was an incredible bright flash and then a meteor with an incredible tail. A few minutes after it had left, a sound shook the ground and buildings in the vicinity. It even set off some car alarms in the parking lot." Anyone else out there see this in person?

LOTR Internet-Only Trailer

Go to the Web site to see the film, (or you can go to see the movie Thirteen Days in theaters to view the first theatrical release of the LOTR teaser)." If you're still awake in California (or in sympathy) and have power, guess you have first dibs.
