Re:My First 10...
Not a substitution for ghost but to add to your very good suggestions..
Sysprep (use Google, tons if info) used with Ghosting tools allows more flexibility when restoring your computer to something with different hardware or distrubuting your image across more then one computer. Not a silver bullet and does take time to get working correctly across your hardware but worth it for anything more then a few different types of computers using only one master image.
Another quick tip is slipstreaming. Bascially you can inject service packs and hotfixes into your W2K/XP install media. When you use that media to install the OS from scratch, it is already "up to date" with the included fixes. -
Re:Non-Exploitable Security DOS Exploit
You have a good point, as using Windows Update is easier (or at least as easy) as any GNU/Linux update method, and can be made automatic very easily (like some GNU/Linux update methods).
One noteworthy difference, however, is that none of the BSD or GNU/Linux update methods tell the vendor the software (and their versions) that you run. To their credit, at least, none of them (including Microsoft) collect any actual personally identifiable information. -
Re:No need to run Windows as an AdministratorWindows is a GUI OS. They have purposely crippled most non-GUI tools that one can use to administer the box. If there isn't a GUI way to do something, you can bet MS is assuming that most people won't want to do it.
True...it's pretty limited.
However, there are some cool tools on the Windows 2000 Resource Kit CD. -
Re:Just one thing
Oh, come on. Get realistic. We've all seen how Microsoft shoe-horns their products onto the desktops of millions. With IE during the browser war, and most recently with the hard to remove, hard to hide MSN messenger tray applet in XP.
Have no doubt in your mind that the "Print to XDoc" feature will be more prominantly displayed, more intrusive, and difficult if not impossible to get rid of.
