Happy Hacking universal PS/2Palm keyboardFor those of you who just HAVE to have your old IBM clickey keyboard on your palm pilot -- or ANY other (Non-XT) keyboard for that matter -- why don't you just pick up one of THESE nifty little cradles from the Happy Hacking Keyboard people that lets you use ANY PS/2 (or AT with adaptor) keyboard on your palm?
Here's the dirt that they don't really publicize though. Some of it very cool some of it is kind of a gripe.. anyway, here it is:- The thing doesnt support the Palm V or Vx without a serial port adaptor. It should work fine with an adaptor though.
- The keyboard is powered by 2 AA batteries located in the cradle assembly. I would guess that some keyboards can really suck power. I've powered many devices with the 5V on my kbd port, so i know it puts out
:) No mention of an A/C adaptor, although it wouldnt be all that hard to create that feature yourself... - You can attach a modem as well as a keyboard with this cradle; which is very good for e-mailing and other fun things. Again, if you want to use a Palm V modem with it, you'll need yet another adaptor. On the other hand, if you use a Palm V in the cradle, you could confortably attach a non Palm-V modem on the cradle.

This looks betterI've got an original GoType and the only gripe I had with it was that I couldn't use a modem at the same time.
This looks like it'll solve both problems in one stroke. Get a Happy Hacking Lite to go with it and then you've got that tactile feedback you're after.
The GoType isn't bad and you get used to the rubbery feel quite quickly.

Happy Hacking KeyboardWe all know that Happy Hacking Keyboard is a really good product except that it isn't shipped in a proper Dvorak configuration. I will not buy one as long as I can't get one properly configured with a Dvorak look. Not that I look at the keys, it's more like a principle for me.
Please send them a mail and tell them what we want, or we will never be able to buy one.

A wonderful essay, it fills me with dread.
At what point am I going to stop just reading about the culture and the people (else) and all the neat toys and actually become a geek myself? This sort of work depresses me in a big way - I have nothing to show for all the effort I put into learning the systems and languages. Sure, I'm only 2nd year university, and I never even thought much about writing software before last year (except in vague fantasies)!
At the same time, though, I think reading things like this extensively before even starting any of my planned projects (and I've been planning and planning!) will ultimately help me do the right thing in all the things I do.
One can hope, anyway!

Re:Happy Hacking
Hey, thanks for putting me on to the Happy Hacking keyboard... I just found a Linux Gazette review on it, and it appears to be just what I've been looking for in a new keyboard! I really miss my old Mac LC keyboard because of its size (and even that had a keypad). This has Esc and Ctrl in the "right" places (compared to the Sun I use at school), as has been said, and I couldn't get that on my Mac; I had tried to remap Control on my Mac keyboard, but ran into the "Control Lock" problem---Macs do the locking in hardware for their Caps Lock keys, so that you can remap them, but they still lock!
:(Anyway, as I said, thanks for pointing this one out. I think I'll be contacting the good folks at PFU America pretty soon. (So maybe they should thank you, too.
;)
