Fearless Leader
I love this picture of our fearless leader. Doing what we've all wanted to do to companies that fuck with us.

Re:They've raised the bar alright.
Although it was originally Quake 1 they started with, it looks like they've made major changes to it, adding in newer technology (e.g., dynamic lighting and realistic shadows, which is more comparable to Doom 3 than Quake 1).
I must admit, I was a bit confused. A lot of the screenshots in TFA look rather crappy, no different to the Quake 1 or 2, and don't seem to show off what the engine's really capable of. There's no evidence of anything newer such as dynamic shadows (the lighting on the walls could easily be precomputed lightmaps).
But go to the older article one year ago, and there are much better graphics - e.g., here you have realtime shadows, and what looks like bloom effect, and possibly bump mapping on the walls. There is one screenshot in the latest article that shows realtime shadows from a character, but it's rather hard to see in the screenshot. It seems odd why they released this latest batch in order to show its "impressive graphics".
There is also a lot more in the way of open source graphics engines - e.g., projects like OGRE (check out the Gallery).

Re:Older computers and XP on minimal configs.
Who gives a shit about running Windows XP on some ancient box. Lets focus on the real issues here...
Don't you think Tux and Ruby look like a fat dude with an escort? -
Possible GPL violation?
Does anyone now if this is allowed?

Because I don't think you're allowed to "reserve all rights" on the GPL-ed parts of this application. -
Re:Shitty Linux font renderingNo this is not Shitty Linux font rendering the font rendering is excellent if you look at the original pdf of the presentation:
https://www.linux-foundation.org/images/6/6e/Dam4
_ google.pdfThe shitty looking fonts on the web page are due to poor scaling of the original images that are linked from Phoronix:

o gle_new_previewwhere the fonts still look good.

Re:rough start
Everything works? So you can use Firefox at a reasonable speed when logged in as a second user now? You can use Beryl now? Those things sure don't work on the X1300 I bought (a horrible mistake) a couple months ago.
It's really absurd - if they'd just release the programming info for their hardware the X.org drivers would support this stuff inside a week.
DITTO and that is why as a exclusive AMD CPU user and current ATI user I am so pissed of at them. How do they dare tell us how hard they are working when they could make it so much easier on them selves. KISS OFF AMD/ATI! Go dig your self a grave! This was pasted from the Phoronox forums where I have the same login. http://www.phoronix.net/forums/showthread.php?t=31 21&page=6 -
ATI and Fedora 7 / X.Org 1.3
I made the same mistake as many Fedora users - jumping (to Fedora 7) before looking. I'm not poking at Fedora here, on the contrary, I am a loyal Fedora user. It's ATI I'm upset with. ATI released a new fglrx driver (version 8.37) since Fedora 7's tests and final release that also does not work with X.Org 1.3. We're all sitting around waiting for the 8.38 which ATI claims will be compatible. And don't even get me started on ATI's absent AIGLX support for Linux. My next card will nVidia.

An example of the graphics issue mentioned. If anyone wants to have an idea on just how tough it can be to get a binary graphics driver running, just check out the ATI forums at phoronix. It's a painful process though I will say one thing. While I can't run beyrl, I now have one hell of a FPS speed on my older ATI 9000 chipset graphic card.
Next time, it's going to be Nvidia.
