    Poking around his other PhotoPoint albums, I came across another very cool creation, Boatman! Definitely not to be missed. He looks so serene, paddling on the lake. I love the eyes. :-)

    One problem that is common with both Lego and Meccano is that it forces the child into building things that are almost all orthogonal. Time has marched on and a great many smart kids have since gotten bigger (grown up isn't the right word) and have invented better toys since then.

    Here are a few alternatives:

    Zometools are like a bit like tinker-toys but allow a greater number angles at the hubs and are much better thought out. They also have a large collection of online lesson plans for educators that are free for the downloading.

    Roger's connections and Mega Magz take the concept further by using ball barings as hubs and magnetic rods allowing for an even more flexible joint and rod system.

    How about having children explore this kind of this cool construction technique, like the artist Ken Snelson.

    Check out Chuck Hoberman's Expandagon construction toy where the parts expand and contract causing the construction to transform from one shape, to
    another.

    You got it - nothing beats an IE bug for pure enterntainment value. Just yesterday, the guy in the office next to mine used the Print Preview feature to check if a web-page he was printing would fit on one printed page. And indeed it fits - with scrollbars! Scrollbars in hard copy, how's that for innovation? Think of all the trees it would save! But seriously, things like this boggle the mind. How in the world can a GUI element end up being rendered in a print context? Only at M$...

    If you buy a TiVo, it would probably behoove you to get a 30 hour unit with a 30 day price compare guarantee. Some stores (Outpost.com, tweeter.com, HiFi Buys) have already intermittently dropped the price to $399 then returned it to $699. With the Sony 30 hour unit coming out next month (see Sony news brief and pictures) for $399, you're almost guaranteed to get a price refund bigger than your tax refund! For more info, simply skim through the AVS Forum section on TiVo looking for 399.

    (And don't forget about the DirecTV rebate!)

    Also, rumor has it that some companies are going to start marketing custom inserts (the way that case is put together this is very possible). Hey, you can customize the OS all you want... why not customize the case?
