Sega Announces Shenmue Online
Thanks to Gamesindustry.biz for covering the news that Sega has announced Shenmue Online, a PC MMORPG, "being co-developed and co-published by Sega and Korean firm JC Entertainment", as part of "its new plans to enter the Chinese online gaming market." JC Entertainment are the Korean-based makers of Rush Online (formerly Priest) and the popular-in-Asia Redmoon, and the press release on Shenmue-Online.com states the game, part of the sometimes adored Dreamcast/Xbox franchise, will be a "MMO Action RPG in which tens of thousands of players will participate in the virtual world of Shenmue staged in China including Hong Kong in 1980's. Players, acting as militants, will use mysterious powers, kung-fu, Chinese weapons and Qigong in real-time fight-action." -
Shenmue III - It's On, It's Off, It's On, It's Off
Thanks to InsertCredit.com for their brief summary of the ever-more-complicated question - is Sega's Shenmue III in production? The site condenses: "Nov. 2001 - AM2 confirms production of Shenmue III is underway... Mar. 2002 - Shin Izakawa, new Shenmue series producer, says Shenmue II XBOX sales will determine release of Shenmue III... Jan. 2003 - Yu Suzuki reveals Shenmue III game designs, expresses desire to make it movie rather than game... July 2003 - Websites report that AM2 confirms Shenmue III will be released, but not where, when or on what. Minor controversy and buzz ensues." GamePro also has a good summary of recent rumors, most of which have either been unattributable or mistranslated. But clearly, Shenmue III was planned at one point - maybe we'll finally find out if it's still being developed at the next Tokyo Game Show? -

A background in game hacking knowledge is listed as a preferred talent. Will any of the Xbox Linux participants take a stab at this job?" -
Massively Multiplayer Games On Consoles
Missionyrd writes: "In an interview on PlanetXbox.com Scott Herrington of Turbine Entertainment discusses the next wave of massively multiplayer games and their possible inclusion on consoles. Up until now MMPGs have been strictly created for the PC. What kind of things could we expect if they came to the consoles such as Xbox and Playstation 2 as well?" Isn't this what all the broadband-and-other network connections being built into or promised for modern console games are for? :) -

John Carmack on the X-box Advisory Board?
Prabhjeet Singh writes "Voodoo Extreme reports that John Carmack is on the X-Box advisory board. Here is the scoop. "According to PlanetXbox, id Software's John Carmack is now on the technical advisory board for Microsoft's X-Box console system". Check it out." The original source is on PlanetXBox. I tried reaching id for comment, but was unable to get through - this is still unsubstantiated.
