Postgresql
Well, if you are unhappy with Mysql for any reason, Posgresql database is an excellent alternative. -
Re:Uh
Happened to me too today. Confusing at first, but I remember it happened before.
Slashdot uses MySQL - what do you expect?
They should use PostgreSQL version 8, a full SQL implementation which is ACID compliant, highly scalable, highly available, enterprise-level and open source (BSD/BSD style license) which is deployed in literally thousands of production applications worldwide.
MySQL isn't the right tool for the job. What job is it the right tool for? Well we could have the gov't give it to Al Qaeda which would mess them up and thus help us in the War on Terror. -
Re:That's okay
It's true that the Win32 port isn't up to snuff, but you should be able to find plenty of non-ass-jamming kernels supported in this list

Re:MS helping OSS - Indirectly
Firebird
Postgresql
Maxdb
They all beat MS-SQL consistantly, and postgresql is coming close to toppling oracle!
Mysql isn't the only open source database in the world. It is popular because 90% of users DON'T need all the flashy features. -
Re:No it is Oracle and Sun that are hurting...
Small note: There is now a commercial version of PostgreSQL available for Windows, but for the moment it's Japanese only and its still beta. See the announcement on the PostgreSQL site for more information.

Re:Why not Sybase on Linux?
To any OSS/Free Software advocates: trying to do this on MySQL is a Bad Idea.
Them, how well would PostgreSQL handle this? ;)
