If Microsoft started being assholes to their users most of them will simply go and use another OS/office suite. But they don't. So people keep using Windows and Office and the wonderful features they provide.
Just because Eolas is going after Microsoft doesn't mean that Eolas' patent doesn't hurt the WHOLE industry, including FOSS. Apple, The Mozilla Foundation, Opera Software, and the KDE Foundation all make software that violates the Eolas patent. And there are more, but these are the big ones.
Don't be so quick to be like "yay, Eolas!" just because it's Microsoft. Stuff that's bad for Microsoft isn't necessarily good for Open Source.

Nope. It's not a criminal matter. Your only recourse is to SUE the customer. That's it. That's all you can do. You can't have the customer tossed in jail. BECAUSE IT ISN'T A CRIME.
Same goes with MP3s. The RIAA is suing, not putting people in jail. Why? Because it isn't a crime. Same reason.

Speaking as someone who has written full-blown applications in VBA, OOo and StarOffice use StarBasic, which isn't quite the same thing as VBA. VBA is a lot more at the system level and gives you more control over the machine.

Yep. They've been showcasing this stuff at a special handicapped mod vendors area (in the basement of Cobo) at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit at least a couple of years now. Saw it first-hand myself...they really sell this stuff, but it's a bit expensive.
