Re:Ahhh, such excellent news
I really meant in a personal sense...I learned MFC fairly recently, released software using it....but no more. And it is a joy. I've migrated away from desktop linux to windows and mac (linux remains on the server), so even though I've always been a big KDE fan, Qt4 hasn't really been on my radar very much. Now I can't wait.

Re:no, it's meaningless
I hate spammers, but this law is meaningless, as are ALL anti-spam laws:
exactly. I just wrote a fairly crappy (but I got a 100!) paper on this very topic. I've posted it before, but here it is again: http://www.progoth.com/spam/termpaper.html. I really do hate politics sometimes... -
Re:Finally!
This has been a long time coming, I hope we're actually able to enforce it. Although, its going to be tough with all the world wide spam.
Is this really just fluff to impress voters? Or do you think it will actually carry any weight?
I just wrote a term paper about this (http://www.progoth.com/spam/termpaper.html). granted not the best paper ever, but you may gain some different viewpoints. basically anti-spam laws are trying to get people reelected while wasting taxpayer money and getting nothing done. -

they're probably talking about this image: http://www.progoth.com/index.php?page=main&action= display&id=15#15

kylix kind of sucksI think kylix didn't catch on for a few reasons
- kylix was using winelib
linux users don't like using apps which were half-ported using a windows emulator (see wordperfect, winamp3)
- better alternatives exist
you want to make gui apps? use the qt or kde libraries. use gtk even. you want a gui app in an easier language? use pyqt, pykde, or even pygtk. perl-gtk if you're really desperate. kylix doesn't offer anything over these. I personally made a few pyqt apps in a matter of hours (see pysp), how much easier can it get?
- external libraries
who wants to distribute 40 megs of libraries with their application? I don't remember exactly how many libraries kylix need[s|ed], but it was fairly stupid
- advertising
I signed up to download kylix, and I started getting flyers in my mailbox (my physical mailbox) from borland. nobody wants that.
- critical mass
enough said
- pascal sucks
again...enaugh said
- kylix was using winelib

Re:Two reasons
You never forget qwerty and from all people I talk to, they can use it just fine
maybe I'm just stupid, but I sure forgot qwerty. and good riddance.
if I'm going to be typing an extended amount on a keyboard, I'll switch the layout. about 1 minute in windows, osx, and kde...less in a linux console (loadkeys dvorak)... otherwise I hunt and peck.
on my laptop I ripped up all the keys and put them in the dvorak positions, and running fluxbox, there's no easy (read: point-and-click) way of changing the keyboard layout. so I love giving people that. call me a sadist.
the biggest pain I have is (was) physics lab, running NT4 with no admin rights and having to type in-class lab reports. so I whipped up converters to turn typing on a us keyboard as if it were dvorak into something sensible. javascript or java.
anyway, yes, dvorak should be taught in schools. -

Re:"because God told me"What is "just" about making assent to a single doctrine the basis of eternal damnation?
if you have the bandwidth for a 9.5 meg mp3, and the patience to listen to ~30 minutes of stuff you don't believe, then try this. I agree with pretty much everything he says, and I think a lot of other people will/do, too. and it's this exact topic.

Re:Screenshots!Holy Schmolinson, that is a beautiful window manager.
if you're talking about the titlebars...yeah, that's the "Glow" decoration. the buttons do a nice color pulse-type thing.
I'm about done compiling kde3 final, just have kdeaddons and kdevelop left, basically. I also found mosfet's liquid theme, which I couldn't find before. here's a new screenshot.anyway, kde3 is fantastic. it's not perfect, kicker crashed on me once already. but...yeah. I still love it.
oh another nice thing is it's keyboard handling. when my girlfriend comes over all she has to do is click on the "dvo" icon and the keyboard globally changes to qwerty layout. KMenuEdit has nice keybinding features...I set the shortcut of opening Konq on my home directory to Win-E, since I've been hitting that to open up explorer for so long.
I'll stop rambling now. if you appreciate a nice-looking full-featured desktop, and you have a decent machine, snag kde3. (mine runs great on a 1400 athlon w/ 640mb ram).

Re:Screenshots!I'm running rc3: my current desktop
The transparency is nice, but I don't have it enabled.
notice the nice icons
I like the image/text previews in konq
the "dvo" icon in the tray is for keyboard layout switching
notice the weather applet in the panel...it's fantastic
decent sound schemes
hover your mouse over an mp3, it starts playing
notice the arrow on the Gaim and Gimp entries in the taskbar for popping up a window list.anyway, a lot of these features aren't new to KDE 2.2 users, but 3.0 is a lot more polished, and I really think it's substantially quicker.
