    What Sony hasn't said for sure is whether the PS3 will be backwards compatible with DVD movies and PS2 games.

    Uh, Yes, they have. Where have you been?

    Geez, this is like last year news, and a simple google search revealed all of these links.

    I can't see anything in the article specifically saying that the PS3 will support PS1 games, just a claim for backwards compatability for PS2 games.

    PS3insider also does not think that the PS3 will support PS1 games. Mind you, with the ammount of power the PS3 is suppost to have, then emulating a PS1 should be trivial.

    And this article says that the PS3 won't be backwards compatible. Trying to discern what Sony is up to with the PS3 from who they hire and don't hire is a little like reading tea leaves. I think we're just going to have to wait it out, although people are going to speculate.

    Another point I might bring up is that, and maybe I'm just alone in this, but I don't play my old PS1 games anymore so I would have no need for that type of backwards compatibility. Of course, I play a lot of sports games so that might be the reason why but I would rather see PS1 emulated in software rather than a hardware sacrifice in the PS3 to get the games running.

    Just my two cents.

    Seeing as how the PSp uses UMDs and not CDs, there is a near zero chance that it will play PSone games (not to mention the increased cost in supplying that backwards compatibility).

    (And yes, i'm simplifying the issue, but there is a strong correlation between 2D games vs. 3D games and cartridge format vs. optical format)

    Not really... there is just a correlation between 2D vs. 3D games and time, and a correlation between cartridge vs. optical media and time. Polygons became a viable option about the same time CD-ROMs did.

    Myself, I'm waiting to see how Sony will pull off their supposed list of features in a portable package that doesn't cost $300, doesn't suck batteries, and doesn't skip.

    (And memory cards for a portable? Ugh!)
