Re:Just look at GNOME 3, Firefox 4+, Windows 8.
The old UIs, developed mainly by programmers, may have been deemed "ugly", but they were consistent and highly usable.
You must be talking about the amazing wget UI, right?
Gnome 3 is a problem, but there is a need for balance. -
Re:Old issue
Yes it reminds me of the Palm Pre iTunes sync fiasco. Now Palm could have (1) written their own sync software and music library (2) read Apple's iTunes XML library or (3) trick iTunes into thinking that a Palm was an iPod. Palm chose #3. Then when Apple enforced the USB device recognition parameters to lock them out, Palm complained to the USB Implementers Forum but the USB IF scolded Palm instead for breaking rules on how USB devices should identify themselves.

Re:Maybe because Macs have real security?
despite the fact that I have found several Macs infected with such rootkits
I don't think you know what that term means.
Even on a Mac that is infected with the MacDefender Trojan, it is exceedingly simple to eradicate, relative to most of the Windows malware I've encountered (for example just TRY to get rid of something that has infected svchost.exe, and/or has polluted the Registry (and deleted all the System Restore points!)). I know. I just went through that on a client's machine. NOT fun!
Rootkits are anything BUT simple to eradicate. In fact, most of them are installed so deep in the system that they are almost impossible to DETECT, let alone ERADICATE. They are also nearly always interested in gaining control of your machine, not simply phishing your credit card info, as MacDefender does (and there ARE no other examples of OS X malware on the RADAR right now, and haven't been for YEARS).
Stop spreading FUD. There are ZERO "rootkits" for OS X. Prove me wrong and I'll gladly STFU. But until then, you do the same, ok? -
Re:what is the math here?
Even if we ignore the fact that some if not a majority of VZ iPhone users will simply be former AT&T iPhone users
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9176349/Verizon_customers_lust_for_iPhone_says_survey
"Of those polled who are currently Verizon subscribers, 19% said they were "very likely" to buy an iPhone if it became available to the carrier, with another 34% answering that they were "somewhat likely" to buy. Both numbers were higher than those for either Sprint or T-Mobile subscribers."
Apple moved 10 million phones in Q4 2010 alone.
Calendar 4th quarter numbers haven't been announced. They sold 14 million during their fiscal 4th quarter (ending in September).
guess we are also supposed to forget about the even larger number of Android devices out there, and the even larger number of new Android devices being sold each quarter when we think about the mobile gaming market.. but still how exactly does 13 million new users double anything?
Study after study shows that Android users buy a lot fewer apps than iOS users. For example, from Rovio -- the maker of the most popular mobile game last year -- Angry Birds.
"Paid content doesn't work on Android".

WebOS
I would wait until HP releases the much awaited tablet with webOS. Analysts are anticipating 40 tablet models from HP in 2011. http://pulse2.com/2011/01/04/hp-hosting-webos-event-on-february-9th-will-we-see-a-palmpad/

Re:Who cares?
For one the market share for iPhones is still much much larger then all the Android based phones out there. It is second only to RIM Blackberries.
That's actually not true, Nokia's apple share has always been much higher than Apple's. Apple's profit margins are rather substantial, though, compared to their percentage of the market.

Re:Complete FAIL for eveyone, including law enforc
No, the true FAIL was that none of the Defcon attendees took pictures of the people servicing the ATM. For security reasons that's the new rule, if you see an ATM being serviced -- you have to take your cell phone and take a picture of whomever is doing the servicing.

Re:If Litigation is required.
Erm? Really? You cannot be serious?
You don't recall Apple suing one of its fanbase (a student & lifelong fan), a web design school (who mostly used Apple's products), New York (for daring to use an apple in a environmental awareness campaign) and of course Psystar (attempting to resell OS X).
I could go on & on. Sure. Plenty of people sue Apple (just like any other big tech corp), but Apple's penchant for pulling out the legal guns against small operators (and its fanbase) makes it stand alone in the tech crowd.

Re:Up next? Yahoo shareholder revolt
Here's one source: http://pulse2.com/2008/04/12/capital-research-global-investors-antes-up-to-6-billion-on-yahoo/ Capital Research Global Investors is Yahoo's single largest shareholder. They purchased $2 billion worth of Yahoo on/around April 12, uppping their ownership percentage from 5.2% of the company to 10.1%. That means they purchased an additional 50 million plus shares at a minimum price of $27.50/share. They likely paid more but I'll round down. As of today's current YHOO stock price (11:15 Pacific) which is $25.41 those shares have declined in value about $110 million. Now, if Yahoo had sold to Microsoft for $34/share, Capital Global Investors would have "netted" about $329 million on the new shares they purchased at $27.50. That's a "swing" from a profit of $329 million to a loss of about $109 million - for a total spread of about $428 million. Even for a big institutional trader like CRG that's not chump change. And that's only one of their big shareholders. I'm sure there are similar stories for Legg Mason and others institutional shareholders...not to mention the 10's of thousands of mom and pop shareholders who really would have liked to bank. That's what I call an ouch.
