worse yet
Worse yet is that the tests are based on 100% gasoline. But meanwhile the congress is passing laws that effectively force (or at least subsidize) the fuel companies to sell up 90% gasoline contaminated with 10% alcohol. I'm sure someone with no real knowledge about this will want to post how there is "only" a 3% energy content difference, but in my experience that is complete bullshit. You can still buy 100% gasoline if you are willing to pay a premium for it (see http://www.pure-gas.org/) but that premium is much greater than 10%, often 30% or higher. I've found that, for my 2013 vehicle, if I buy 100% gasoline that I get at least 15% better mileage, some times as much as 20% better than alcohol diluted gas. So I would be much better off if the oil companies simply sold me 9/10 of a gallon of gasoline for the price of a gallon rather than selling me 9/10 of a gallon poisoned with 1/10 of a gallon of alcohol. I would get better mileage, I wouldn't have to lug around the extra weight of the unwanted alcohol, and I could put more real gasoline in my tank, giving me a better range. But because of the political clout of some farmers in Iowa and Arthur Daniels Midland Corporation, I have to pay to have my gasoline watered down with alcohol.
And, of course, this doesn't even consider the insanity of driving up food prices and forcing us to waste grain for political reasons rather than using it for food. I'm not going to give you some bullshit about starving kids in Africa (there will always be starving kids in Africa), but I've seen prices for my own food and my dog's food (no matter if I feed him something that includes corn or not) driven up just by the extra demands for corn this stupid policy causes.

Re:Good resource for Ethanol-free gas stations
The site http://pure-gas.org/ has a pretty comprehensive list of gas stations and suppliers of Ethanol-free gas.
Thank you for that link, There's a station close to me I'll be using now.

Good resource for Ethanol-free gas stations
The site http://pure-gas.org/ has a pretty comprehensive list of gas stations and suppliers of Ethanol-free gas. In my experience, the Ethanol causes the most problems with small, 2-stoke engines like chainsaws and string trimmers. 2-stroke is very sensitive to air/fuel ratio, and the Ethanol makes them run leaner, which causes over-revving if not compensated for. Problem is that a lot of machines have limited adjustments, due to air quality laws. It is such an issue that companies like Stihl that make small engines are selling premixed 2-stroke fuel in cans for ridiculous prices. Also, you don't always know what the exact percentage of Ethanol is, so you can potentially have to adjust the carburetor for every batch of fuel.

Re: Ethanol is a crock nobody wants
http://pure-gas.org/ - lots of places. I go to the not quite local gas station to get pure 87 for my lawn mower and snow blower.

Re:Ethanol is a crock nobody wants
I'd really like to find a place I could get pure gasoline.
You can, depending on where you live. Check here.

Apparently all gasoline in Alaska is ethanol free. Or maybe the low temperatures slow the decay. The stories about it started before ethanol was common, so I'd guess it's having an unpressurized storage container in high heat will result in decay over time. That would get the results that have been reported as well, without violating rules of chemistry and physics that the myth. Mythbusters to the rescue, 100 year episode. -
Re:Yeah, I'll think about that for you.
If you look around, you can still find real gas.

Re:Who cares if we are hungry...
Use this site to find ethanol free gasoline.

I only buy non-ethanol gas for all my vehicles. Especially important for my moped engines. Thankfully non-ethanol gas is relatively easy to find in North Dakota. -
Re:Yes.
Nice and concise.
I hate ethanol, it's a massive drain on our water tables and a drain on the economy. More personally, I'm sick of having my car run like crap and getting 20-25% lower gas mileage than when I get the ethanol free stuff (check out http://pure-gas.org/ ) and it really messes up my motorcycle. The gas goes bad in half the time, fouls the oil, and eats up the rubber lines and gaskets. If the government wants to prop up alternative energy production, it should be going into the electrical infrastructure and actual clean energy research and production.

Re:A clear example of how lobbying hurts everyone
I'll be using E0 for as long as possible. A few stations still have it.

Re:Scheduled to end....
As I understand it, along with the subsidy expiration is the elimination of the tariff for Brazilian sugarcane ethanol, which was being imported anyway to the US because of the higher tax credit for sustainable EtOH when used for making E90 (US production being exported to Brazil to pay for it). So ethanol will actually become cheaper! A few gas stations near boating facilities have been selling unblended gas http://pure-gas.org/ but most wanted the 5 cent per gallon credit for E90. Many small airports will let you buy leaded aviation gas for two cycle engines.
My chainsaw seized after overheating last month, after which I measured the ethanol content of my fuel mix to be 17.7% (add 100 ml of gas to 50 ml of water in a baby bottle, cap and shake well, read the water + ethanol level after it separates again). I am using $5/gallon aviation fuel in my new chainsaw. Using E85 voids the Husqvarna warranty!
