Transflective Laptop Screens?
Ed_Moyse writes "It's a beautiful sunny day here in Geneva, and I've just been outside, enjoying a game of Advance Wars on my GBA. What I'd enjoy even more is to be able to work outside. Does anyone know why reflective laptop screens don't exist? It'd save battery life and should (if the GBA is any guide) work indoors too. Geeks with tans!" Timothy points out that what this reader is probably looking for is a transflective display, not a reflective display. The difference is that transflective laptops don't depend on ambient light, because they can be selectably backlit. Anyone who has ever used a laptop outside will know the advantages this may provide over your traditional LCD screen. -
IE 5.5 Tracking Default Bookmarks
Paul Guinnessy writes: "Has anyone else noticed that the default bookmarks in Microsoft Explorer 5.5 do not go directly to a site such as cnn.com, but instead go via a redirection via Microsoft. I'm just a bit curious (and a bit uncomfortable) to know what they will gain in gathering this sort of personal information. " There's been a lot of slimey stuff with browsers (remember the What's Related problems not so long ago?). I guess I'm glad Mozilla is coming of age. As long as Web sites don't start doing something stupid like requiring IE... oh... wait. -
Java Add-On Development Kits?
Wombchimp asks: "For all of us who program in Java, the development kit is vital to do the slightest piece of coding. But I seriously doubt that there is one person who has not made some custom utility class to fill a void in the JDK. Why is there no real widely known organisation to collate and develop an add-on development kit which could fill this void and collect a database of useful utility classes? Most sites seem to offer full blown applications, but the odds are it took some useful assistant classes to build it. The closest I've managed to find is the Giant Java Tree, which isn't really organised enough to see if what you want has already been coded, and Gnu's Java Library, which doesn't really have enough. What do you think? Is there some site already filling this gap? Or is this idea a waste of time? "
