Re:Non-US alterantives
>>>Slacker radio is one of the best as far as I'm concerned.
I just listen to standard AM or FM stations. Since HD multiplexing has arrived, most of them carry advertising-free channels which specialize in various formats (disco, club, alternative, album rock, etc).
Here's the one I listen to while at work (since everything else is blocked):

Re:The whole process is not transparent
The time they had? I think they had more time than they wanted you to think. When a politician says "we need to pass this bill now! we need to spend money now!" and when the bill is so long that most of the people that voted on it didn't even read it
...Listen to Bloomberg Radio's On the Economy just over the last few days. They interview economists from around the country and around the world. All I've been hearing the last few weeks is how the government is moving too slow-- hell listen to yesterday's interview. They say we're going to suffer tremendously from the lack of action from the government and the huge amount of time it's been taking.
I really don't see how waiting 48 hours (two days) would have killed the economy. Oh my goodness, we had to wait 48 more hours before waiting several more months before getting stimulus money.
It's not just about when the money is spent, it's also how much damage is done to the financial sector while no decision is made and no bill is passed and credit is frozen. From what everyone's said, we've already blown the Sweden timeframe. The option to follow that model is already pretty much gone.
If it wasn't bad enough that it's just spending more money than we actually have to somehow fix the problem of spending more money than we should be, on top of that it's been railroaded through Congress on the basis of a presumed crisis.
Again, listen to the economists. Not talk radio. Not politicians. Not ideologues. Economists. You'll find widespread agreement-- we have a massive demand hole in our economy, and government alone can and needs to fix it. Government needs to be spending a lot more money and a lot faster or things go downhill. Every day in the short term prolongs the crisis by months if not years (see Japan).

Have you tried http://radiotime.com/download/?

Re:I realise this isn't ask Slashdot... but...
I second the SqueezeBox. The integration with RadioTime (http://radiotime.com/slim) makes it better than the Roku boxes. You don't have to bother with a URL sniffer, find the station you want on the site, add it to your favorites, and it will show up on your SqueezeBox.

Re:Wasn't this called RadioShark a few years back
As I recall from owning it a while back, it was mostly hollow - no reason it could not have been put in a smaller case (other than there was no reason to ever do it)... most likely if you want "tivo" like functionality, you want it in an always on-stationary computer and if you have a laptop you were always able to stream the radio content from that stationary system (radioshark has built in net streaming). Of course after a while I found RadioTime and NPR web pages (from which I could download other radio content) plus various podcasts - so the RadioShark became pretty much useless (easier to have a boombox next to computer for listening to live radio)

Re:RadioTime?Yes, we do. You need an AM/FM tuner to do so. We sell a USB FM tuner that is currently FM only (AM real soon). We also support several third-party tuners.

RadioTime?I work for http://www.radiotime.com/, we are working hard to bring "TiVo for radio" to fruition. We're flying low under the radar as we develop the service, but expect to "launch" in march.
The RadioShark is a great piece of hardware but fails in the biggest area that makes TiVo great-the guide. What good is recording radio if you don't know what is on and where it's coming from. The heart of our service is our guide, it covers am/fm, internet, and xm/sirius radio, and soon will have full rss/podcasting support. To quote our website, we have "35,000 stations in 140 countries. 100,000 sports games per year."
We have both mac and pc clients, though the mac client is still very early in development. Recordings are made as simple mp3 files, and even get dumped into itunes. The mac client supports the RadioShark, the pc version will very soon.
We're always looking for great feedback to help us improve the service. Sign up is free for unlimited listening.
