Sammy Buys Shares, Angling For Sega Takeover
cdneng2 writes "Following failed merger talks earlier this year, it seems like game developer/pachinko giant Sammy has made a bid to acquire 22.4% of Sega shares. Sega's former parent company CSK sold its shares to Sammy, Japan's largest pachinko machine maker, who also has a game development subsidiary. The article mentions: 'Sega managed to rebuff its most enthusiastic suitors [including Namco, possibly EA, Microsoft] in a determined effort to remain independent', but it seems their efforts may be failing. The piece also notes: 'Sega officials are believed to have been particularly unhappy about a merger with Sammy due to the shady image of the pachinko industry in Japan'." -
Gundam Online - 160,000 Simultaneous Connections?
Hido writes "A new PC MMO title called Gundam Online: Universal Century is being developed in Japan by Bandai and Sammy , and is currently in its beta testing stage. The site says: 'We are trying pretty stimulating thing such as 160,000 people's simultaneous connection, a seamless space expression, reappearance of earth area in a full scale, and real-time-transmission in the specifications.' Quite apart from the wonderfully descriptive Engrish on the official site, has anyone seen, translated, or otherwise checked out Beta reports from this MMO title? -
Sega Cancels Merger With Sammy
After many complicated and confusing rumors, Bloomberg Japan seems to have confirmed that Sega Corp has abandoned plans to merge with Sammy. Apparently, Sega couldn't agree financial terms with Sammy, who specialize in pachinko machines, and also have some home and arcade-based videogame development. The front-runner for a Sega merger/sale is now Namco, but Microsoft and Electronic Arts have also been mentioned as possible suitors. The saga continues.. -

conform writes "The New York Times reported today that Sega Corporation (the Japanese parent company) has merged with Sammy Corp, a vendor of pachinko machines. The Sammy side of things are expected to dominate post-merger operations, and will likely shift Sega operational focuses back to the arcade market. Also, the end of the article notes in passing that SquareSoft has been aquired by rival RPG manufacturer Enix."
