WalterGR asks: "There are plenty of resources available for writing operating systems, e.g. Tanenbaum's Modern Operating Systems, the Dinosaur Book, and countless web sites. For those of us who aren't interested in low-level issues, and prefer focusing on human-computer interaction, what resources are available for designing windowing systems (a la X Window)? Issues like the object hierarchy, event management, modularity, redefining behavior at runtime (e.g. for skins) etc. Any suggestions?"

AMD has released a manual in PDF format to allow software developers to migrate their code to its 64-bit Hammer microprocessor platform. The PDF document is here and Sandpile Web site gives excellent explanatory material of the content of the PDF file. Surprisingly, Sun supports the Sledge Hammer. Article can be found here

The german technical magazine C'T recently visited Transmeta's office in Santa Clara. Transmeta's roster is impressive, including not only Linus but also Robert Collins and Christian Ludloff both well known for their work on finding undocumented instructions and registers. Transmeta's LongRun technology (reducing CPU power by varying frequency and voltage) only works with APM, and without it the TM5400's net consumption is 5W at 43 degres Celsius and 600Mhz. At 700Mhz the TM5400's performance is slightly under that of a 500Mhz PIII. The TM5400 will be the first processor to use IBM's new CMOS8S copper process. In the interview David Ditzel denies having used Elbrus technology in Crusoe. For non german speakers, there's always Babelfish.
