First MAJOR City??I'm offended! What size of city qualifies it as major, or is it relative to other cities in the region? OK, so I'm not offended, but the implication that Vancouver is the first to have this is incorrect at best. Saskatoon, another Canadian city, has been using the system for almost a year already. Re:Fffft, old news
Not only that, we've been using this in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan since October. Boo-urns to the poster's arbitrary use of the phrase 'major city'

Re:US only phenomenon?
Here in Saskatchewan (Canada), my school was ruled by the band and choir geeks. I was one of them. We wern't like you see in movies like "American Pie" and such, we were normal people. The jocks weren't very popular, but they were accepted. The cheerleaders were the lowest of the low, aside from the FLS (Functional Living Skills, retards if you will), except for one English teacher, whose order of preference went: Cheerleader, female, male.
It also didn't matter if you were in French or English, they were held at the same level. -
Canada for GeeksI know that was meant to be humorous, but I'm sure that's part of what Canada has in mind. Consider the economic effects if fast connections are easier to get in Saskatoon than in San Jose!

Sounds just like .CA
Funny, us Canadians have been doing it this way for a long time, with only one domain per person or organization:
- For
.ca:- must be federally incorporated
- must have offices in multiple provinces, or
- have the domain based on a federally registered trademark
- For
.sk.ca (Saskatchewan, Canada):- must be provincially incorporated
- must have offices in multiple cities
- Everyone else can only get cityname.sk.ca - even city/town councils (see city.saskatoon.ca or town.outlook.sk.ca
.CA domains, and they are in the process of changing the rules to allow better utilization of .CA. The one nice thing about .CA domains was cost - if you knew the right people, it cost nothing to register (gotta love a volunteer-run TLD). Alas, that will be changing too...
