You mean Sandy Munro? You know those guys have chops, right? They're not amateurs. Also, I don't know if you took the time to actually watch the entire interview, but he gave Tesla credit for numerous things that he thought they did extremely well — better, in fact, than literally anyone else. The electronics leap immediately to mind.
Besides that though, there are plenty of other media references as well, not to mention the owners complaining all over the official forums. Please don't pretend like Tesla isn't having quality control problems. They absolutely are, and there's no credibly denying it. When you get in to this kind of money, it's not cute to have problems like that. It's not an especially huge amount of money to spend for a product that does what it does, but it is enough money where it's disappointing for it to have that kind of flaw. If we didn't care about style, we'd all drive identical-looking vehicles which were based on the intersection of crash safety and aerodynamics.
It would be less embarrassing if this were Tesla's first car, but it isn't...

Mission systems in general...
I find it interesting that this project will make use of Red Hat 6.8 to complete the COTS picture.
For other needs, the software suite has to show a high level of reliability as well. Think along the lines of DO-178* (safety/mission critical) requirements

Magic Leap tech hunt
I did some digging on the interwebs looking for the real tech behind Magic Leap, surprisingly, I found that they actually do have the key people who invented core pieces of technology, when put together results in a high resolution high frame rare light field display, in other words, digital holography movies where your eye or any camera can actually focus on the near and far objects in a display.
Start by googling the keywords "scanning fiber technology", follow the trail of clues from there and you will quickly realize the tech they have is real and it works. I'll just list a few clues below:

But this is a camera not a display! Yes, the scanning fiber tech works both ways, you can put light sensors or light sources on the other end

Oh come on, https://www.sbir.gov/ is there for you. Lots of start-ups take advantage of SBIRs. Big businesses are actually banned because the government wants to support start-ups.
You do kind of need to specialize. If you want to do both government and non-government, put a pair of businesses under a holding company. This just keeps the accounting separate.

One of the biggest reason these tech isn't available to the public is because they help objects stay invisible from radars, the materials are too effective at absorbing/transfering incoming energy.

Qu Tubes for High Temperature Heat Rejection
In our proposed effort, we intend to perform high temperature (100-200 Deg C) characterization of an ultra-advanced heat pipe to determine feasibility of using it in high temperature space radiators. In previous work, we have shown that the so-called "Qu Tube" achieves exceptionally high thermal transport rates at lower temperatures. BENEFIT: Our innovation will significantly reduce the size of radiators used on spacecraft and satellites, thereby reducing their mass and their cost. It can also be applied in many industrial heat exchanger designs.

If you're so sure human already knows everything then explain why this room temperature superconductor invented by another Chinese is breaking multiple laws of thermal dynamics.
Preliminary results of Qu Tube heat pipes we are testing show high thermal conductivity, with lower bounds as determined by the fin equation of the order of 10,000 to perhaps 30,000 times that of copper (e.g., 339 wlm-K).

You are exaggerating.
First of all, US government solicitations can be vague or specific. When they are vague, it is intentional in order to encourage a wide variety of proposals. Have a look at: http://www.sbir.gov/solicitations
Now here is where you are very wrong. Bids and proposals are anything but "a very vague description of a project and associated budget". Maybe years ago, in some areas of the US Government this was true. Maybe its still true in a handful of areas. But right the majority of DoD proposals are very specific. I've composed, won and lost SBIR proposals. Vague SBIR proposals are rarely awarded.

The small company I work for goes through the http://www.sbir.gov/ program. It includes grant solicitations from DOD, NIH, and others. It can be pretty cutthroat but we've been doing okay funding R&D activities with it for almost 10 years.
