Re:Where I work

There is a solution
SecureWave which uses a small kernel agent that uses a whitelist approach. Anything not allowed by the admin is dropped and considered deadware.
It's the only thing out there like that!

The best solution
I'm not here to preach about whether our not it is smart to manage removable media.
I'm just here to give you this link. It's a great piece of software that works well. -
Securewave
I've used Securewave. It's pretty good, it lets you specifiy what USB devices are allowed and block everything else by default. You can also mirror data so you can audit what data people are sending. It works on USB, CD, Floppy, parallel ports, Serial Ports, and I think it does firewire too.
Once it's set-up it's awsome.
I don't work for them, I've just used their product and really liked it. -
Re:Half-assed, probably can't be done feasibly any
I've used this product, they actually changed the name to Securewave. It's an awsome product, much better then any of the alternatives I investigated.

Secure NT option
There's a product that lets you set policies about what devices can be attached to computers in your domain. You can lock down all non-necessary ports on your PCs. We turn off USB and firewire ports and only turn them on for specific people on specific PCs. Works like a charm. Sometimes too well!
Securewave Secure NT and Secure EXE -
SecureEXE
Sounds a lot like SecureEXE.
