To me this sounds like paranoia. The points are interesting enough, but to assume that the AOL / Netscape merger is going to force Apple into a tight corner is ludicrous - Jobs and Co. will do that on their own.

Besides, doesn't anyone remember that the third party in this merger is Sun? Who's to say that Sun wont develop a consumer version of the Corona (a kickass $500 semi X-term) and push that as their appliance?

I went to a very technical, high-level Jini presentation awhile back and I have to say that while the idea surrounding it is totally wickedly cool, the security nighmare with it hasn't been addressed in the least bit. The example given was have somebody break into your car, attach his palm pilot and BINGO Jini accepts him in the net and the car is his.

It's nowhere near ready for anything at this level yet and won't be for a long time.

  7. Wah! So many negative people =( on iMac Factory Burns · · Score: 1

I think what irks most people so much about Apple is the arrogance of the established user base. I dont' think anyone would / could argue logically that the Mac sucks from top to bottom. It does some things really well and has shortcomings like all other OS's.

The main rub with the user-base is that most of them don't know what the other OS's can do and that other systems are superior or equivalent in many ways. This can be said for huge devotees of every OS, but the Mac has a more vocal and loyal base than any other platform.

I wish everybody could ease up on things and realize that different systems fit the need of very different people. Quit bashing already.

C'mon. OSX server is a nice first step. It's unproven at this point and will remain in Apple's line of "niche" products. I think it's a good first step, but there's still a long road ahead for them to be a player for the rest of the non-Mac world...(read 90% of us).
