"Thieves" and a "miserable failure"
-
Living in Spain myself,
Spanish RIAA-like associations (SGAE and subsidiaries like Promusicae, etc.), are being investigated right now because of lack of transparency, illegal politic finantiation, blackmail ("chantaje").
The prosecution is nonsense and will result in a null case, but their intention is to stop actions not by legal reason, but by legal intimidation (in Spain there is *fear* about speaking against the SGAE in public media, because of you can be sued easily). Many people do google bombing refering "http://www.sgae.es/?ladrones" as a measure to protest against these "kind and polite organizations", so when you look for "ladrones", they appear in the first place. -
Re:This just in
Let's not blame the entire country of Spain for the actions a few lawmakers. Here in the US, my home country, there is regularly some bone-headed senator or congressman on Hollywood's payroll who introduces a bill like this and has no idea what its implications may be.
This is certainly a dangerous precedent. If other governments see that this is "working", they may adopt something similar. So instead of complaining about Spaniards (you should be complaining about Siempre Ganamos Algunos Euros, Spain's MPAA/RIAA equivalent), keep up on legislation in your home country, and write your lawmakers and tell them you don't want to see anything like this happen. -

Re:Such a shame....
You could read "Por favor, pirateen mis canciones!" (please, pirate my songs). It's the point of view of a musician that says things like "sé que son más rentables 100.000 fans piratas que llenen mis conciertos a 10.000 originales" ("I know that is more profitable 100.000 fans pirates who fill my concerts than 10,000 original ones"). This article is 3 years old, but still valid.
If you look for thieves look there. ;) -
Re:Such a shame....
Nice try, but you are wrong. I don't know if laws are (exactly) the same here (Spain) and there (USA), but I think they are close enought: Here you CAN'T do GPLd music. Everything is a property of this thieves (the ones that say Linux is shareware and are against a "digital democracy), even if you don't want this. It's not that they possess your music, but they charge for playing music even to the author (some songs had to be removed from sites because this sites didn't pay the author... that were the ones puting the songs in the site).
So the solution could be making GPL a law. -
SGAE (Spanish version of RIAA)
About SGAE (spanish) canon on CDs:
Ladrones
2.330.866 CDs x 0,17 = 396.247,22
396.247,22 x 0,20 = 79.249,44 para la SGAE
396.247,22 x 0,80 x ( 0,50 + 0,25 ) / 66000 = 3,6 para cada intérprete o autor. -
Weblisten.com
People are talking a lot about the new sites, i.e. MusicNet and Pressplay, but not saying a word about existing sites.
There is a site here in Spain called Weblisten where you can download thousands and thousands of songs (even full CDs) in MP3 (128 Kbps) or WMA format. They have been out there since 1998 or so and it's LEGAL. Yes, it's LEGAL. They pay a (big) fee to the SGAE, the Spanish Society of Authors.
They carry almost everything that is published in Spain and has any success. I mean, this it NOT only for new artists like mp3.com: Weblisten has REM, Leonard Cohen, Britney Spears, etc.
Their website is in English and Spanish.
BTW, I'm not endorsed in any way with Weblisten.com. I'm only a user.
