IGDA Casual Games SIG, Whitepaper and Quarterly
Dubane writes "After launching just over a week ago, the IGDA's Casual Games SIG has just released both the 2005 Casual Games White Paper (2MB, 125 page pdf), as well as the inaugural issue of the Casual Games Quarterly. The White Paper is the work of over 30 volunteers in the casual games space, and the list of contributors reads almost like a who's who of the industry including; AOL, TryMedia, Skunk Studios, Large Animal, Pogo, Shockwave, Garage Games and many others. One of the most interesting sections for developers may be the Games to Market section which asks the same questions of 18 different publishers and gets answers about a variety of topics including Commission Breakdown (50-65% rev share from Garage Games) and even who/how to contact each company. The Quarterly focuses entirely on technology and consists primarily of Oberon, iWin, PlayFirst, HipSoft, Reflexive and Skunk Studios answering questions about their development platform and technology." -
NYT on the Rise of Casual Games
securitas writes "The New York Times' Michel Marriott reports on the rise and growing importance of casual games to the video game industry. Casual games are sold exclusively over the Internet, are downloaded to PCs from sites like Yahoo Games, Real Arcade and Shockwave.com, and are 'generally simple-to-play, short-duration games that are graphically unsophisticated'. Casual games will represent $250 million of the $8.4 billion in 2005 domestic United States sales according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. The article cites Diner Dash, which publisher PlayFirst says has 'sold more than 50,000 copies and continued to sell about 1,000 a day' at $20 per game. The article says that this type of game '... is not found on the shelves of video game or consumer electronic stores. Nor is it sold on the DVD's that deliver interactive 3-D fantasies to millions of PlayStation 2 and Xbox game consoles...'" -

As per 'This Land', this movie pokes fun at both Bush and Kerry, with some stop-overs for the Vice Presidents former, current, and hopeful. Check it out before they get sued off the 'net again!" -
On Independent Games And Cutting Out The Middleman
Thanks to DIYGames for their two-part series discussing the problems independent game developers have with distribution channels, and possible ways to stop these distributors taking all the profits. The articles explain the positives of online sales: "Building customer awareness for a game took time and energy... [but] with the advent of the distribution channels like RealOne Arcade, Shockwave, and the others, indies now have access all the customers of the distribution channel virtually overnight", alongside the negative fiscal aspects: "In most cases the indie must agree to give up 60-70% of their game's profits for the privilege of having instant access to the distribution channel's customers." The piece ends by discussing alternatives, pointing out that "A [thriving game-related] community is as viral a selling tool as any, and it helps preserve the life of the game in the marketplace." -
Machinima Invade Hollywood's Turf?
Thanks to Wired News for posting an article discussing the rise of machinima, which are "animated movies.. utilizing the [real-time] 3-D graphics engines of games like Quake or Unreal." The article cites prominent machinima such as Jake Hughes' Anachronox: The Movie and the machinima-created music video for Zero 7's 'In The Waiting Line', and according to Bill Rehbock of Nvidia, "..machinima methods, in addition to providing a hobby for aspiring filmmakers, are starting to be used in the creative industries far more than is apparent. For example, George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic is using the Unreal engine to storyboard Star Wars movies." There's also a significant cash prize for machinima makers as part of Epic's Make Something Unreal competition we mentioned a few weeks back. -
'South Park' Creators in Web Deal
wunderhorn1 writes "Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of South Park, have agreed to do "39 short cartoons" for Macromedia, Inc.'s Shockwave.com. According the the New York Times article, Parker and Stone will "receive equity of less than 10 percent in Shockwave.com," which will apparently be run as a subsidiary of Macromedia. "
