free alternative showmypc
If I need to do some remote tech support, I'll have the person download showmypc . It's not as robust as logmein, but easy for a person to install.

You can lead a horse to water
but you can't make it to drink. So the best way would be to take over their PC. As long as there is no connection issue, then this is much faster and will save you a lot of time. If you use pc Anywhere or http://showmypc.com/ or anything else will depend on your needs.
ShowMyPc has helped me a lot already. For occasional usage it is free. I you want your own server andadvertising, prices are available as well and not that expensive.
But again, Internet access should be available.

Works well, free, uses ssh and VNC and one time hashes that you'll exchange over the phone. Really quite easy to use, and IIRC its a standalone app that doesn't actually install anything so once you're done there's no port listening afterward to allow anyone an easy attack vector.
blah blah blah I am not affiliated with showmypc blah blah blah -

It's VNC...
It is VNC based. I tried to download it and got this message:

Re:You missed the obvious joke...Right on their front page: "It started as an open source Desktop Sharing and Remote PC access project..."
And then what happened?
And if what they claim (that they use, but haven't modified vnc/openssh) then there's no problem here, and no, as per their Web site, it isn't open source.
Slashdot really is scraping the "slow news day barrel" this week. -
