FYI
The people behind this book also run an excellent website on web-development:

Download the First Four Chapters
Sitepoint (the publisher) has them here. The downside is you have to give them your email address first.

Re:I wonder who mysql steals marketshare from?
Sure.
Look here and here. Both of these websites mention what postgreSQL (and Oracle)offers that mysql is lacking as well as how to migrate to PostgreSQL. Keep in mind I am not a database administrator or do I consider myself a sql guru. I only use them to write web enabled apps as a hobby and not in a corporate environment.
However it was rumoured that postgreSQL lacked real backup tools to fix a corrupt database. I believe this might of been fixed but was an issue 3 years ago. This is the only downside I see. Both Mysql and Oracle have tools to fix such a problem. Maybe someone who is reading this who is more familiar with administering databases can comment on this.

Re:Recommendations for beginner book?
I really found "Build Your Own Database-Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL" by Kevin Yank to be helpful.
It assumes very little knowledge, and guides you, step-by-step, through PHP and queries and formatting, Database setup and population, and how to build online forms for editing information in your database. Naturally, you also learn how to extract information and present it via the web.
Later it gets into sessions and cookies, db management (which felt unique to books on this topic) as well as considerations about how to build your database schema.
I knew *nothing* about PHP or mySQL before I started reading this book. I had one college class on SQL years ago, which helped a tiny amount, but we used Access. ((shudder))

SitePoint rocks. Used to like phpbuilder.com, but it seems to be dead and the forums are clogged with helpless noobs.

Web Developer Resources
Your question is rather broad and lacks any specifics, but I get this feeling you're looking for information regarding web site programming, hence the "My intention is to ask about web sites this weekend". In that case:
Sitepoint
A fantastic web site dealing with everything from learning new programming languages to design ethics to search engine tips.
Cool Home Pages
Stuck? Out of ideas? Check out some other fantastic designs. "The only known cure for designers block"
PHP.net
Even though it's the languages official site, there is a wealth of information here. Every function is very well documented and you'll recieve a ton of information.
PHP Builder
Possibly the single best resource to ask your questions - but before you do that, search the forums. Chances are your question has already been asked and has a fantastic answer.
w3schools
Great resource for all things HTML, CSS and so much more. Remember CSS is your friend on the internet - print the quick reference!
And if you're looking to getting into some open source databasing:
MySQL
Once again, the developer of an open source project has a fabulous web site just rigged with useful information.

Re:For a moment
The company I work for went the other way and tried to stick EVERYTHING on the same domain name. Talk about a chatoic shambles... Personally I see nothing wrong with companies using more than one domain as long as they do it in a logical manner - for example as a network of related sites like SitePoint.

AMD is clearly superior
Pentium's 4 architecture leaves much to be desired. It's price compared to equivalent AMD chips is way to high... the price difference between an ATHLON and a P4 would be better put to use by buying more RAM, a better motherboard or video card -- you'd end up getting a lot more bang for your buck with that.

It's about the voters, stupid!
The real problem is that tstores and Government will bend to the demands of adults who wrongfully belief that games with a little bit of gore will turn the countries children into gun-toting thugs.
It is after all the adults that vote the Government in, and that keep the stores in business, not the kids who buy and play the games.

Noisy Laptops....
Something that is more of an issue for those of us who travel on airplanes are noisy laptops. There's nothing as annoying as a loud hard drive on an airplane that pisses of the person sitting next to you.

Volcano's sustain life
Could the sulphur and lava flows possibly provide the energy to sustain life on the planet?
The more we find out about IO the more I'm sure that some primitive life exists there.
