Nice
They definitely did better than my attempt. I guess I wasn't thinking outside the circle enough.

Re:Summary
Haiku boots quickly
I just tried it in VirtualBox OSE. It booted up in about 35 seconds. That's the same as Ubuntu. Nothing to get excited about. Also, the first thing it did after boot up, was show an error message...

COBOL on .NET with GTK#
This pretty much blows my mind:

The compiler here is called Wildcat, and it's a
.NET compiler (runs on the CLR). -
Re:Cool
Here's a side-by-side screenshot of Safari on Windows and on OS X, rendering Slashdot and showing the differences in the toolbar, menu bar and title bar... screenshot

Cool
I've just played with Safari on Windows and it's cool. I'm unsure about the menu bar at the top though, and the extra 20 vertical pixels or so that it takes up - that just doesn't look as clean as it does on OS X. Windows needed another browser to give IE a run for its money, and this is it.
And it supports rich text editing in GMail :-)
I hope it will be supporting the plugin framework that Safari on OS X does, I like things like the Inquisitor search plugin. -
Re:Attention Story Poster... Calling the posterboy
And it's not just OS X it does nothing on. Debian too. I'm going to make a wild guess that it's supposed to display the mis-spelled word.

Re:The Need to Reboot
All of the software I use at home is listed here. Most of it was not already installed on my computer when I decided I wanted it. It took a while to set up. If I'm moving to a new computer, I'll TAR up the software as well as my data. No point in installing/compiling twice.
Having to mess with drivers and registries sounds rather unpleasant. IMO, well written programs will re-create their default settings if the program starts and things appear to be missing. With the list of software in the above link, I just plug in my hardware and it works, although getting my PDA to sync required an extra driver I think. -
Re:Google Cache
Not quite as cool, but I bet this was Scotland's fastest web server at the point when the photo was taken, travelling at 70mph with the web pages stored on a Palm m100, and the uplink to the Internet via a Nokia 7110.

Re:Is it really a problem?
I don't do anything illegal online (warez, stealing music, etc) so I've nothing to worry about.
Sir,
it has come to our attention that you have been illegally hacking into private computer systems. Please report to your local police station to pay your fine and receive your forehead tattoo. Failure to do so will result in your termination.
Have a nice day!

Re:readably long lines
I've not done much HTML writing recently, but decided to play around with some CSS a few days ago. I came up with this which seems to work fine in Konqueror and the Mozilla version I have at home, looks a bit weird in Phoenix on Solaris at work, and looks plain horrible in Internet Explorer 6. IE was originally ignoring the
.classname>elementname { } type of styles. It also seems to choose its own values for table margins in my example, rather than going with the zero specified in the stylesheet. I've not done much of this in the past, so I'll probably figure it out later. -
Re:Text entry?
Predictive text with a T9 dictionary on my Nokia works fine for me. My website's guestbook is accessible via the web or WAP on a mobile phone. You can sign or browse my guestbook on a mobile phone. One key for each letter in a word, with a smaller area for your fingers to cover isn't that bad really - unless you have larger fingers than Nokia considers to be 'normal'.

Re:opera as big as netscape?
You've got the wrong people looking at your site then
;-) Konqueror 2.2, followed by Mozilla, followed by IE5, followed by Konqueror 3.0. -

Re:WAN, not LAN, and other inconsistencies....
My PC can do that, and all my friends that are getting new PCs are getting similar specs to this. Hmmm... maybe "commodity" PCs to us and the rest of the slashdot community are different to what you're talking about? 4 of my PCI slots are 64bit/66MHz ones and my system was well under GBP1000.
