Macs In Space!
Clark writes " SpaceViews reports that the startup company SkyCorp will fly an Apple Macintosh G4 computer in an experimental satellite next year. It will be deployed from the space shuttle. The server will be accessed as the sat passes in range via wireless networking protocols, including a variant of Apple's existing AirPort wireless networking technology. The project, announced at the recent Silicon Valley Space Enterprise Symposium, is mainly intended as a test for Skycorp's plans to assemble and deploy satellites at the Space Station." -
NASA and Boeing Lock Heads Over Space Station
Ornslo writes, "NASA is getting angry at Boeing about their project management of the International Space Station, thanks almost $1 billion in cost overruns. A NASA report released last week puts much of the blame on Boeing's acquisition of Rockwell and McDonnell Douglas, and how the company underestimated the impact this would cause on development. Because of the overruns, Boeing will lose over $125 million in incentive bonuses. I think World War III will be over money and nothing else if it ever does happen... NASA Faces Major Budget Cuts
jfoust writes "A House of Representatives appropriations subcommittee approved Monday a nearly 10 percent cut in NASA's fiscal year 2000 budget, with most of the cuts in science and aeronautics. If approved, it would mean most of the currently-planned space science projects, including missions to Mars, Pluto, Europa, and comets, plus new space telescopes, would be canceled. Check the details at NASA Watch and SpaceViews. " If you're a US citizen-write your Congressperson. This is idiocy. -

DS1 Ion Engine Works Again
Jeff Foust writes " This press release from JPL states that the ion engine of NASA's Deep Space 1 is back online and has been running continuously since Tuesday evening.". In other science news, EETimes is covering what IBM has been up to in its R&D labs... focussing on projects that deliver products quickly. One of the developments is a 200 dpi colour 16-inch diagonal paperlike screen. I'd like one of those please ;-)
