Speculating already!
"It was drowned 300 million years ago in an earthquake, its discoverers speculate" They only just found this thing and they're giving it's life story. In other news: Archaeologists found a small piece of pottery near the site, they believe it to have been a pre-historic settlement. They have managed to reconstruct their entire society.... here's an artists impression. http://www.speedygrl.com/Racer/wallpaper/flintsto

analogies (kicking a whale?!?)
Analogies You Probably Won't Find in Great Literature:
The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't.
The man fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a Hefty Bag filled with vegetable soup.
From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another city and "Jeopardy" comes on at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30.
Her hair glistened in the rain like nose hair after a sneeze.
Her eyes were like two brown circles with big black dots in the center.
Bob was as perplexed as a hacker who means to access T:flw.quid55328.com\aaakk/ch@ung but gets T:\flw.quidaaakk/ch@ung by mistake.
Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever.
He was as tall as a six-foot-three-inch tree.
The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease.
John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.
The thunder was ominous-sounding, much like the sound of a thin sheet of metal being shaken backstage during the storm scene in a play.
George Bush was like Albert Einstein at this stage

YOUR RIGHT TO PRIVACY INVADED
Ok so I wouldn't use AOL if they paid me to, but one has to be concerned, especially if they're an AOL user and by chance reading here. Users are supposed to have a right to privacy, judging by this article the interviewed person should be sued for violating someone's privacy rights while hiding under TOS bs. Surely I can see he states he is doing his "job" but how much of his "job" would be to post about older women and their cats. I would not be upset if I heard about AOL suing this moron for NDA based stuff.
Sure you can moderate this down and troll it to a -3 wouldn't matter, the facts remain, I'm sure even the typical user would expect to have some form of privacy when using their ISP.

You should read the article... Think about the CA business really good for a second.
CA sells certificates to ensure your data is encrypted between client and server. You, yourself as a vendor can create your own certificate which costs nothing. Now... do you know entirely that the CA company is entirely secure, simply because they claim to be?
Things to think about:
Who gave the right to these companies to issue certificates, their is no governing entity to monitor these companies security policies. Are their employees trustworthy, is their network trustworthy, whats the difference between seeing a "Trust-E" certificate and "Vendor Company" certificate?
Most people aren't really keen on whats going on between SSL on the client and server side, and when was the last time those who did know check the validity of a cert or the company that issued it?
So you mean to tell me you would dish out a couple of grand because a company "says its so and xxx certificate is the definitive line on secure services?"
No thank you I would rather create, monitor, and control our own certs in house, and ensure that our information is to be used by our company solely.
who's that girl? -
The SSL scam
Certificates provide an attractive business model. They cost almost nothing to make, and if you can convince someone to buy a certificate each year for $5, that times the population of the Internet is a big yearly income. If you can convince someone to purchase a private CA and pay you a fee for every certificate he issues, you're also in good shape. It's no wonder so many companies are trying to cash in on this potential market. With that much money at stake, it is also no wonder that almost all the literature and lobbying on the subject is produced by PKI vendors. And this literature leaves some pretty basic questions unanswered: What good are certificates anyway? Are they secure? For what? In this essay, we hope to explore some of those questions.
Ten Risks of PKI: What You're not Being Told about Public Key Infrastructure By Carl Ellison and Bruce Schneier

CHILDREN UNDER 13. Please note that the ICQ API as well as the ICQ service, Software, network, system, Web site, servers, various directories and listings, various message and news boards, tools, information and databases, are NOT FOR USE BY CHILDREN UNDER 13 YEARS OF AGE. If it comes to ICQ Inc.'s attention through reliable means that a registered user is a child under 13 years of age, ICQ Inc. will cancel that user's account.
This has to be one of the funniest and stupidest statements I've seen. For those who use ICQ/LICQ/MICQ/etc/etc when was the last time anything you did via the client was validated by the server. It sounds all good to parents and law makers who don't know any better, but my info states I'm about 12 years old, I live in Lithuania, etc., so much bogus information it'd make a wanted felon cry with envy. This is like (in my opinion) the case with some of these online cigarette companies, who were selling tobacco to kids under the age solely because they ordered with a credit card. Well sure if they have a credit card they must be legal, just don't verify they might have gotten the credit card number from their parents... Sure.... no need to verify, step right up for your Marlboros
If you are not a citizen of the USA, then the laws of the State of Israel, excluding its conflicts-of-law rules, shall govern this Agreement.

3d characters vs. People
I'm sure this might affect the actor's union one day, but News.com is reporting that Lucas is going to have an animated lead CGI character in the next Star Wars movie. As long as they leave out Jar-Jar, I'll enjoy the ride."
Personally I don't think it'd affect any actors union for one of a few reasons.
1: 3d characters take an extreme amount of time to generate and get right, I used to be in the graphic design field and tinked with some pretty neat programs years back like Strata Pro Studio, Form-Z, etc., and I can remember the little things like hair, motion and overall movements were difficult, and judging byt he strides in today's movies (seeing Final Fantasy commercials too), it'd be hard for a company to get it right and costly.
2: Even with the 3d generated characters, its likely bluescreens and other high tech stuff will be used to assess moves, etc., and someone will have to pose for this, which means someone is getting paid on so the 3d char isn't really free in respects to pay.
3: 3d movies, cartoons, commercials, etc., are extremely costly and time consuming, they'd end up paying more for animation artisits, modelers, renderers, hardware, software, than they'd pay an up and coming actor.
Judging by the success and overall nature of Lucas Films I think he's doing the movie solely to please himself, then the fans.

Siemens is a mega corporation, so its going to be neat to see how this plays out on other European countries using Microsoft based products, as well as the governments of Germany and America's trust in each other (remember with a company like Siemens, its not like its a mom and pop company ranting off.) Germany is a very powerful force within the European Union as well so chances of this rubbing off into other countries will likely take place in the not-to-distant future.
Another oddity is why would they just come out of the blue and state these transmissions are going to Denver? Out of all the places (for a conspiracy theorist to mention) in the US Denver and not someplace like Washington. Well here are the only places I know offhand capable of capturing, sorting info in the Colorado area along with respective information: ITS, NSA orders (keep in mind these are publicly accessible websites and known locations)
I wonder if MS would comment on this article or will they ignore it. This isn't the first time MS has been accused of having backdoored software.
(In fact here ya go enjoy... gov doc a, gov doc b, Slashdot's prior MS/Backdoor article)
Also its not the first time someone in the European Union has accused the United States of odd actions involving espionage. There was also something along the lines of ECHELON being by the U.S. used to promote industrial espionage in order to beat the EU to a large (billions of dollar large) aerospace deal with Saudi Arabia.

Well here's the babelfishified version of the German article:
German Federal Armed Forces banish Microsoft programs from fear of US secret services the Foreign Office and the German Federal Armed Forces safety gaps want to conclude. Instead of American software on the national computers in the future German programs will operate.
In computers, which are used in sensitive areas, no software from Microsoft is to be used anymore. After realizations of German security authorities the American espionage service NSA has encoded data all relevant source codes of the US firm and can read in such a way. In order to protect secrets, the Ministry of Defense sets Siemens and Telekom therefore on encoding techniques of the domestic companies.
The Foreign Office reset meanwhile its plan to introduce video conferences with its representations abroad. Undersecretary of state Gunter Pleuger experienced with a Telekom presentation in Berlin at the beginning of March that all satellite transmission ways for technical reasons run over the American city Denver in the Federal State Colorado.
Pleuger was too uncertain the detour via the USA. " then we can hold our conferences directly in Langley ", spoettelte a Pleuger coworker. In Langley (Virginia) the American secret service CIA resides.

Point the finger
Imagine, if you will, hundreds of students taking a test in a large classroom. One of them, near the back of the room, perhaps, has a little chat session running on his handheld, allowing his friend who took that test during the previous period to feed him all kinds of useful information. Hmmm.
Now imagine if you will, a professor who took the time to wander through that large classroom or assistants along with the professor who monitored what was going on during the exam instead of sitting back reading the latest news instead of doing his job
Coming up with a dozen other ways to cheat on exams using a campus-wide wireless network is left as an exersize for the reader. Coming up with a reliable way to prevent such cheating is a great career move for anyone interested in an IT position with the school.
People are people and they don't neccessarily need a wireless device to cheat on an exam as they've done so for years before computers were even used in school, so this argument to me is a bit meaningless.
I will take note though that some of these campuses are overspending budget funds by purchasing some of these services (Internet based) I mean think about it on a reality based level, do you need a T1 or even a fraction of one coming into a college dorm? Sure they need net access to study but a better method would have been a reimbursement based plan to pay what they use, this way tax payer dollars stay down, colleges can purchase more, overspending is cut down, and abuse doesn't skyrocket.

Publicity
With the declining ratins of the X-Files within the past 2 years, this may be just a ploy by Fox in order to boost the X-Files ratings via a publicity based case of Fox vs. "X Files Fan Club" or something.
One of the things to keep in mind is any unauthorized used of X Files (copywritten) items such as logo's, graphics, etc., may be in full violation if you don't have the prior consent of the owners. Its sort of like that warning message that comes up when you play a DVD or VHS movie, which we all ignore.
Sure it sounds as petty as all heck, but there has to be a bit more for the reasoning of Fox going after a school based fan club site which is not mentioned anywhere.

10 things I hate about you
Outbound requests (URLs, requests for pages, FTP addresses, mail sent, etc.) are sent to the Internet through the OUTBOUND connection (phone line, ISDN, etc.) to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). The results of these requests are then returned to the router (and your network users) via the high-speed satellite link.
A sure technological break through. Sign up for internet service, purchase an expensive "router" and your off to see the wizard
Helius Satellite Routers include Virtual Technician (SM) service for remote management. This suite of tools allows Helius or remote support centers to connect to, configure, diagnose, manage and remotely reboot a Helius router.
Well I'll be... Spyware. The thought of having a company remotely manage anything on my networks sends an bad vibe down my spine. I wonder if their tech support people are trained enough to diagnose hardcore problems, and if their trustworthy enough (Helius that is) to allow them this sort of access. No mention of whether or not this can be disabled either.
Even if local network or satellite connections are down, Helius satellite routers can be accessed for reconfiguration or restarting through a dial-in connection.
The power of marketing!!! Sure they won't tell a possible client off hand if a network or satellite connection is down "We will reconfigure your router, but hey dude, you won't have Internet access!", I wonder how many non technical people will fall for this ploy and think a fully redundant Internet connection with this appliance.
Helius Satellite Routers can be integrated into any IP environment. They work in any operating system environment including Microsoft NT, Novell NetWare, Apple Macintosh, Unix, Linux, and Solaris.
sigh... Poor *BSD's no mention of them at all. I'm sure it'll work either alone or with Lin compat tweaks but its sad to see companies overlook the BSD's.Helius satellite routers use Caldera's Linux OS kernel and are compatible with all open Linux-based Internet applications and services.
Now wait just a second. I 've used Caldera and its horrible as all hell. I would rather use MS than Caldera, I wonder if its tweakable to either do a boot install of another OS, theres no mention of it, maybe someone can ask for a test drive of this product.
Anyways sorry for more rants, its Tuesday, raining in New York and my stock portfolio is in a Six Flags Amusement Park roller coaster ride so I feel edgy.

At the moment, there is no direct relationship between us and Sierra. They know that we exist, and we suppose that they still exist by the time you read this, but that's about it. We have asked for SCI specs, but they assured us that they did not have any documentation pertaining SCI available. On the bright side, they haven't tried to sue us, either.
I wonder why some of these gaming companies don't take the initiative of assisting developers port their software to unsupported systems such as Linux, and the BSD's.
The upsides to doing so would:Cost nothing in their own budgets
Create more exposure for their companies
Could create revenue next time around for new games
Open a new market other gaming companies don't have. (Linux, BSD's)
Its a bit odd to see that most gaming companies are still on the MS bandwagon, when significant articles, studies, polls, show that Linux and BSD's have gained ground within the past few years. I'm sure if there were more games available there would be a bigger boom of *nix users.
Anyone from a gaming company here care to comment?

Um... no
The way the numbers are generated, you would need the person's password to have a number generated, which means that if you broke into someone's email, pc, etc., to gather information on em, chances are you could figure out their password and then generate the number.
Its a bad idea for credit card companies to go the route of having a user generate a random number based on a password, as history shows us people are simple, and will often rely on choosing simple passwords.
Again, a simple fix for this would be to have the credit card company pre-determine a block of numbers via mail or fax to the person, then afterwards have the person verify them when they intend to use them by phone if possible where caller ID can be used to ensure its the correct person.
Upon verifying the information, the credit card co., can then activate the numbers for use.
Just my two cents.

NSA (Never Saw Anything)
One of the things concerning the NSA's release of SE Linux is, in some instances, they complain that terrorists, and criminals are hindering their (the US Government) efforts to investigate, and or monitor crimes, and they go and release this distribution of Linux.
Think about that for a quick second with an open mind if you will, and look at exactly what was said in this articleCIA director George Tenet said individuals such as Osama bin Laden - the man alleged to have been behind the 1998 bombings of US embassies in East Africa - are using the internet to cloak communications within their organisations. "You recruit people on internet sites and you use encryption," Tenet said. "You move your operational planning and judgements over internet sites' use of encryption. You raise money."
If things are so bad for NSA officials to keep tabs on terrorists and the way they commit digital crimes in association with their acts, then why would they release an OS that could further help these terrorists hide/secure their data. Sure you can look at this post and claim its a conspiracy of some sort to point out these findings, but lets take a look at how many 1k bytes of code could be inserted throughout the SE Linux OS to have them somewhere down the line be combined in order for the NSA to open a backdoor of some sort.
Bin Laden inspires particular alarm in the US. National Security Agency chief Mike Hayden says his own organisation is "behind the curve in keeping up with the global telecommunications revolution", which bin Laden is able to exploit. Hayden blamed this gap for the US's failure to prevent the 1998 embassy attacks, which killed 224 people.
We all know about the OpenSource arguements and whether or not OpenSource solidifies security, the fact remains, no one has gone line for line on the NSA's code for SE Linux to determine whether or not they've done something shady to hide their underlying actions for creating this OS.
Now back to the OS in general, I would like to see a comparison between say SE Linux vs. OpenBSD, or SE Linux vs. TrustedBSD. Personally I would option for OpenBSD, as Trusted is an overlay for FreeBSD.
Again, one should wonder about the facts, the NSA claims people like Usama bin Laden and Fidel Castro are giving them headaches with technology, and yet they release something which could help them? Typical politics wouldn't you say. Hey, here's some thoughts to consider for NSA naming conventions this millenium.

Secret Service
This amazing piece of technology, which I tested while huddled against the elements at a train station in New Jersey, is made largely of paper.
Secret Service officials have asked to see this phone recently, I think the article was on Cryptome.org or something similar. Odd that such high ranking government officials would want to see this. See way I figure, if its used in the commission of a crime, there's no trace back to the cellular, nor is there a way for them to monitor a conversation. So expect some sort of fallout between government and the inventor. As a result, it's incredibly cheap. You'll be able to buy one for maybe 10 bucks, and it will come with 60 minutes of air time. When that time runs out, you can throw it away, or just punch a button to add another 60 minutes of time.
It is a nifty idea by all means, but again law enforcement will see this as a problem as they may not be able to use ECHELON based programs to monitor whats going on, thereby leaving another means of circumvention of laws by criminals.Basically, this is a calling card with a telephone built in. And the technological advances it's based on--22 patents have been awarded to its developers--are going to have a dramatic impact on many things we take for granted.
? I disagree with this, how is taking a cellular phone for granted, its not a neccessity in life, and although we use it in every day life, we've been fine without it in the past, so I see this statement as overkill. The phone, conceived by Randice-Lisa Altschul, relies on a technique that allows a standard electronic circuit to be literally printed on material using magnetic ink.
So a binary reader may be able to gain information on the innards of this phone, giving people the ability to tinker with it some. Well leave it up to the next Defcon, or other Con where someone will figure out the workings on this, then we can guess government won't like this idea too much.she's already got worldwide orders for 100 million of the devices and three factories standing by as soon as she receives approval for the device from the Federal Communications Commission. It's a fairly routine assessment guaranteeing things such as the device won't unduly interfere with other technology.
I think she has more to worry about than the FCC when its concerning this type of product, again I wish I could find that article, so people can see what I mean. For instance, these phones are pretty much untraceable, like a call from a pay phone. That's great if you're concerned about privacy but bad if you're worried that bad guys will use stuff such as this to make it harder for law enforcement to catch them.
Well there's small mention of law enforcement here, but again I will search for the prior article on the Secret Service's concern over these phones, and its not like its the FBI or something, these guys (Secret Service) don't normally get involved with these issues, which made me think about, what exactly is going to happen when these phones (if these phones) are released.

I wouldnt say its a server concern I would use it as a wake up call to those who don't know much about security.
It wouldn't matter much even if you didn't have anything worthwhile on the machine should it be compromised however it can be leveraged as a gateway to attack other machines which can leave you in a bind if you were unaware that your machine is being used as an attack station.
annoyance psychologically with the rest of the world ... ?
Personally I think if your involved somehow on the net you should take any kind of precaution regarding security regardless if your running any services, using credit cards, etc., the more you know the easier it'd be to avoid having someone do anything to your machine in a case of not knowing or not giving a shit.

etc etc
Personally if I were in your situation I would go ever to a couple of job sites and search for companies willing to sponsor H1 visa's. Pages such as Hotjobs, Dice, Monster, all have options for foreigners to break into corporations via sponsorships.
Speedygrl has a comprehensive listing of job search engines and companies.
I've never dealt with looking for positions in other countries but soon I will be asking the same question when I get close to moving to Sweden, so I'm curious to these answers as well.
Hope that helped a bit.

Long live cryptography!
Most of the issues mentioned involving hidden messages in various formats such as jpg's and audio files are not new news however I feel any information published is good to know from an educational perspective as well as a model for those paranoid types who are concerned with big brother based programs such as Echelon and Carnivore.
Applied Cryptography offered some nice information as did Information Security Management Handbook but for relevance as to the extent of big brother watching, some should go to the NSA's website and read up on their archives including Venona, and the Enigma machines to get a grasp of how deep government goes in to get their information and how you can address minimal measures on your own to avoid having your information snooped.
Last September I also wrote a quickie document on Circumventing Carnivore that mentions some of these methods to pass information off without it getting caught up on a steriod induced governmental sniffer. Sure it may not be Harvard type material but it should create interest to anyone not too familiar with encryption, ciphertext, algorithms, a simple how to.
As for the title disappearing crypto I hardly doubt it is disappearing in fact with all the hype surrounding PKI's, and the media's ever mentioning of `[H]ackers* I can see many more books, FAQ's, and companies rushing to release more information on crypto from all levels be it beginners to mathematicians based levels.
/me bounces to fatbrain to place an order with info obtained from creditcard.com crackers (of course I'm kidding)
