Re:Good
Also, be sure to check out Stanley Milgram's famous "obedience to authority" experiment
The point of his experiment was to see at what length an ordinary person would go to commit harm to another under influence of an authoritative figure. Don't miss the chance if you ever get to see the original footage of the experiment.

Re:But...
what do you think bush is
.. churchill 2 .. germany and hitler were opposed not because of who they were but what they did .. america and bush are germany and hitler 2 .. do you think that 10 to 20 million germans that let hitler and the nazis do what they did .. were any different than the average american .. that how it happens .. study stanley milgram work on the subject of submission to authority ..

At the risk of Repeating myself
i have said it before and i will say it again
..
i will however repeat myself because .. in my own life i have had the experience of telling people something over and over again .. until they get it ..
were upon the normal reaction is .. why didn't you say that before ..
were i could say i did .. but they will insist that i have not told them before .. etc. etc.
if you really want to understand what and why things are happening the way they are .. study the work of Stanley Milgram and John Taylor Gatto
http://www.stanleymilgram.com/
http://www.johntaylorgatto.com/
that and the fact that there is no were near enough resources for everyone in the world to enjoy an average american lifestyle .. about 1/4 to about 1/8 being the range .. 3 in 4 four to 7 in 8 need to die .. for it to happen ..
the level of control need/desired by the wealth/ruling class will only continue to increase .. and the water WARS will make the oil WARS seem like a warm up ..
and as Albert Einstein said " i do not know how the third world WAR will be fought .. but the fourth world WAR will be fought with sticks and stones .."

Re:One more vote for the Conservatives, then?
it's simple really
.. Tony Blair and most of the Labour government are not true liberals .. they just ran as liberals to get elected .. something that has been going on for quite sometime now .. they just use a softer stance to appear to be a better chose than the hard line conservatives .. the majority of all politicians are members of the ruling class .. regardless of which party they belong to ..
they also own the media by the way .. not to mention the banks etc.
this all really happened in and around 1948 .. the year that Orwell wrote 1984 .. with the arrival of broadcast and cable TV ..
party politics democracy is a ruling class ..
simple majority democracies are noting but limited dictatorships .. calling themselves democracies ..
in a real and true democracy .. there and be no representation in lieu of the people .. party .. constitution .. or otherwise ..
but as Stanley Milgram and others have pointed out .. that 65% and upward .. of any given population can be counted on to simply submit to authority .. it's a done deal ..
and the ruling class is very well aware of this fact ..
http://www.stanleymilgram.com/
modern technology is just making it possible for the ruling class to have the amount of control and power that they have always wanted ..and thought was their birth rite anyway .. but did not have the man power or means to make it so ..
a good place to start investigating .. Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars .. the 25 anniversary is believed to be referencing to the first Bilderberg meeting ..

how bad?
i have said it before
.. but at the risk of being redundant .. as are most of us .. to those of the ruling class ..
in my opinion .. if you want to know how bad it can/will get .. you only need to look at two issues ..
first one ..
the willingness of the masses to be obedient to authority figures .. study the work of Stanley Milgram .. the CIA has ..
http://www.stanleymilgram.com/
second one ..
Ecological Footprint ..
though the number varies .. the middle ground being 3 to 6 .. the number of planets required to provide an "average" american life style to the present worlds population ..
which to those of the current ruling class would suggest .. that 3 to 5 out of every 6 people .. eating our food .. drinking our water .. and breathing our air .. will need to be eliminated by some means .. and if a profit can be made doing it .. so much the better .. global warfare is a good start .. and with all the modern technical and biological knowledge the options are almost limitless ..
and if you don't think it a valid issue ..
up until now about 6 percent of the worlds population has managed to consume about 30 percent of the renewable resources and produces nearly 50 percent of the inorganic garbage ..
india and china are just starting to chase the american dream in earnest ..
and the reason it will happen .. simple ..
because it is too depressing and too difficult for a mass population conditioned to trust and let other people make decisions for them .. to be willing or able to do anything about it .. especially when the average person's source of information and knowledge .. is the corporate owned and controlled media .. and state controlled public education ..
throw in generational amnesia .. and it's a done deal ..
and another revolution (rotation) will not change a thing .. as what is require is a paradigm shift .. something the current state of mass consciousness is not likely to be able to embrace .. do to it's programed narrow mindedness .. left vs. right .. liberal vs. conservative .. -
Re:hrm...
Most of your neighbors have the potential to be concentration camp guards under the right circumstances. There is tremendous pleasure in murder and rape, and all that they really lack is the opportunity.
It's not so much a question of "pleasure", as it is of our dangerous and powerful tendancy toward submission to authority.
It's only a thin veneer of civilization that separates us from our demons
It's exactly this sort of belief that causes people to set up more authority in order to supress these "demons"...i.e., creating real monsters to fight ones that are mostly imaginary.
"Mostly" because yes, there are a few folks out there who, under the paint, are psychopaths. But they are few, and creating authoritarian stuctures for them to hijack lets them do more damage.

No normal citizen
in your Saudi Arabia experience piece you say
..
"No normal citizen of a secular "western" nation would tolerate this level of interference with his or her" .. "reality"
no offence intended .. but i think you and many others are very naive about common peoples level of awareness and tolerance of the world around them .. but then again the most people are pretty common .. especially ones who have gone through the public education system(Mass Brainwashing) and are subjected to Private Mass Media(Propaganda) ..
i would suggest you investigate the work of Stanley Milgram http://www.stanleymilgram.com/ to get a feeling for what common people will tolerate ..
basically 65-70% of any average population is willing to put someone to death on the word of an authority figure for having done nothing more that make a mistake ..
not for having committed a crime .. not for having killed someone else .. just simply for having made a mistake .. -
Re:Nut job?
Eh? Why does this qualify him for 'nut job' label? Just because he's doing it "outside the established scientific order"?
If you really think that someone independently investigating para-normal activity, without kow-towing to the 'powers that be' who have already failed to provide sufficient answers to these things (yes, cow mutiliation is real, no, nobody knows why it happens), then you, sir, are the nut job.
Here's a book you should read, Obedient Peon. Happy Authoritarian Day! -
Six degrees of separation
I wonder whether they'll finally be able to (dis)prove the hypothesis that everybody knows everybody else within six (or however many) degrees of separation.
This was first proposed in 1967 by social psychologist Stanley Milgram, (in)famous for his shocking experiments on human obedience, which inspired Peter Gabriel to create the subversive sing-along "We Do What We're Told", a.k.a. "Milgram's 37".
This paragraph brought you by a flock of hyperlinking free associators with Erds number 4.
